“Our class felt strongly about cleaning up a stream that many of them pass on the way to and from school. This grew into a stream study and the clean up of the stream that runs through the back of our kura. This has inspired future mahi with plans for planting and rejuvenating in collaboration with community groups in 2020! Thank you School Kit for another awesome learning experience!”
“The SVA kit was a catalyst for our work around what we could do to bring our school motto, Non Nobis Solum, Not For Ourselves Aline, to life. We made and sold sherbert and also raffled donated food items raising $505 for the Hastings Food Bank. I know this was not quite the ideal for the kit however it got the boys thinking about what they could do to help those less fortunate than ourselves in our community.”
“It has been amazing when the students directed their SVA project demonstrating organized plans and strategies for keeping the school environment clean. Some children decided to pick up rubbish on the way to/from school; others pick up rubbish once a week around school; while other students created messages on posters and video to share at school assemblies.
Having the SVA class kit filled with lots of ideas and guidance was just awesome.”
“My kids just loved doing this, such a great way to finish off the year! We wanted to show appreciation for the people in our school and community who have helped us this year, so we used the kit to help us execute acts of kindness such as fun treasure hunts for our neighbouring classes, a suprise for our school secretaries, cleaners and grounds keeper and we wrote and delivered thank you letters to businesses around our town. Thank you school kit!”
“We have had ups nd downs with our project. Students wanted to create a fitness path in our community close to the schools so that children and other community members could enjoy it as they walk past. Auckland Transport promised to get back to us about whether we could or not but we are still waiting for that... However, all is not lost. The students got together and asked the BOT if they could put it in our school as community the school is open to the community after school hours. ' Yes!' they said! and the SVA are preparing this to happen next Monday! Hooray! Thanks SVA headquarters. What a great initiative!”
“We have been really busy thinking of ways we could care for and help our community. First we had to define what a community was, then after this was established we brainstormed ways of helping. With Christmas fast approaching the children though it would be great to collect toys in good condition and pass onto less fortunate children so that they too could enjoy Christmas. Last week a notice was put in the school newsletter and parents were contacted via Seesaw, plus posters were made. Our classroom is the collection point; this will continue all week and on Saturday I will take the collection to Christchurch where they will be given out on Monday at a Christmas party. The children have also been busy picking up sticks off our playing field after the big winds last week, to help the caretaker. All in all a busy last 2 weeks of the year.”
