SVA Schools: Volunteer Kit 19 Reviews

My students have loved the experience of having to plan, budget and writing emails. They have had to become cooks, helpers, advertisers, prompters and many other ‘jobs’. The money that they have raised will go towards helping children of the same age have a better Christmas this year compared to other years.

On the 14th November our RI E-waste group held an e waste day in the schools old Biotechnology room. We collected a range of devices including: desktop computers, mobile phones, printers, tablets and laptops. The day was successful because of the hard work we did planning. Also, we had specific roles which we stuck to. We worked together effectively. We collected all the e-waste from the school as well as members of the local community. We each had a different role and worked well with each other. Some groups worked on recording details of the devices collected, others collected and sorted the devices. We arranged for the devices to be collected by Computer Recycling Ltd as they were able to dispose of the items in an eco-friendly manner. We helped to load all the items into their van to be taken for disposal. The SVA kit provided us with a excellent framework and inspiration to complete our project.

This project was awesome! It allowed the students to become engaged with issues in their community and become more aware members within it! Sorting through all the raised concepts we settled on a beach clean u as we live in the beautiful Hawkes Bay! We spent the day outdoors picking up rubbish to keep our country and it's oceans beautiful. Some of the plastic that was sourced on the beach clean up day was later used to create artistic bird feeders! The resources were so handy and it allowed students to take leadership of different areas! Thanks so much.

It was an excellent kit for me as a teacher and the students. The students enjoyed the process and working out what project we could complete in the time we had. Groups of students put on a performance for a junior class to help build a sense of community in the school and promote the leadership skills of my soon to be year 5 class. A very valuable experience.

The Year 2-4 children of our space have throughly enjoyed being a part of the SVA project. I have appreciated the kits well set out programme and supportive material to guide the children to inquire into what it means to be a volunteer and what dispositions they have and how this corresponds with jobs for the team to pursue the chosen project. We have completed our project day now. The children chose to have a community car wash at school for a day! This certainly ticked all the boxes of fun, engaging and helpful to others in the community. All key elements of a successful SVA project. Thank you school kit for this opportunity and we are looking forward to continuing this next year as part of our team.

The kids loved being able to think about who does fantastic volunteer work in our community that the wanted to give back to and others chose to clean up our environment, picking up rubbish and weeding gardens!

My students loved this opportunity. We had a discussion that resulted in the decision to incorporate the kit into our class camp. Students loved the planning and being able to take action. We volunteered in a conservation area with DoC. The students gained a lot of knowledge and some hands on experience, whilst wearing their badges and coats where they we able to act out each of their roles. Once we came back to school the children were still excited about the topic and they decided to continue making a difference by focusing closer to home. They decided we would help our school and caretaker. Jobs were assigned and students completed a wide variety of tasks with enthusiasm and pride. The students were left feeling empowered, positive and proud of their work.

Our year 3 and 4 children were very keen on this school kit. We helped our city council plant native grasses in the local reserve. This then led to our whole year group learning about Kaitiakitanga and how the choices we make have an impact on the environment. We learnt about upcycling, recycling and what happens to our rubbish. There was some fabulous learning that went on and our parents were really impressed too. Thanks, school kits that was awesome.
