Thanks a lot for the SVA Kit. The students in our team really enjoyed being part of this project. We had two groups that took on two different projects. One group's project was 'Say No to Plastic'. The other group worked on advocating 'Mindfulness'. We will review the 'Say No To Plastic' project here. The students chose this topic because they found too many students were bringing plastic in their lunch box and this is not good for our environment. The students got together and made posters. They did presentations in front of other students in their classrooms. They talked to them about the consequences of using plastic. There was a question/answer session too. They also did a presentation in front of the principal. They checked lunch boxes at lunch time. Outcome- Plastic has reduced, students are becoming more aware. Action- Students have made flyers which will be sent to parents to create awareness and reduce plastic. Copy of a flyer is attached in the photos. Next Step- Students will do their presentation in front of the whole school in week 9 of this term.

This has been a great kit, we have used it to help the students to be able to take control of their learning and what direction they wanted to take this in.

Totally awesome - we were able to come up with some ideas to help our local Women's Refuge in Porirua and were visited by Caroline Herewini to do our handover. We baked some treats and organised a foodbank collection for whanau less fortunate than we are. Caroline also talked to us about her job taking tamariki to their kura and helping them and their whānau out at the 'holiday' house. We learned HEAPS and loved it - especially sharing our baking with them!

Thank you School Kit Squad and Patrons. My Year 1/2 class from Winchester Rural School loved the SVA Kit and were so excited about planning and participating in a beach clean up. This all started from our class doing regular clean ups at school and the children wanted to prevent more plastic entering our oceans. We had lots of people think that Caroline Bay beach is really tidy and that we wouldn't find much. In an hour and a half the children and our helpers collected Shoe, sock, glove, jandal, handkerchief, material, chocolate wrapper, sugar wrapper, toilet seat, tiny bits of red, blue, green, white, back, yellow, purple plastic, nerf bullet, burst balloons, plastic bottles, lighter, cigarette butts, cigarette filters, bike, ice cream wrappers, fishing net, lolly pop sticks, jam jar, blue rope, paper, polystyrene, polystyrene balls, toy spade, glow sticks, loom bands, syringe, chemical breathing mask, bottle tops, cigarette packets, red felt pen, lolly wrappers, glass, chip wrappers, popcorn wrapper, headphone wire, pens, straws, string, chewing gum, plastic packing strip… Really quite heartbreaking. We also got to see a leopard seal relaxing on the beach which was a bonus. I will use this kit again and hopefully do an SVA project each year.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to be involved in SVA. As a class we went through the process of coming up with a meaningful area in the community that we could be involved in making some change. We discussed responsibilities and roles of each person. The actual resources were great but I feel I needed to dedicate more time in managing the project than I expected. With older children I think that SVA would be easier to manage. Thanks so much guys.

Outstanding resource. It allowed my students to go forward and identify the areas of service that were most important to them and find a need in that area. The students really took the lead with their teacher scaffolding them. This is an activity that I will be doing every year.

We are a class of Year 5/6 students. We decided to help a great facility located approximately 30 minutes from our school. . Takiwatanga Sanctuary is a Sanctuary for rescued animals and also doubles as a Retreat/Respite Facility for families with Autism.. The Sanctuary is a non-profit organisation and relies solely on donations to keep it running. Unfortunately, on the morning of 15th October a twister ripper through the Sanctuary.Plants were uprooted, animal shelters lifted and dumped up to 100m away. Gear and animal food was destroyed. As a SVA project we have been collected items from our community. People have donated animal food and we have sourced 40 replacement native trees. We plan to have a day on Mon 25th Nov where we will travel to the Sanctuary with trailers full of items that they need. We will spend the morning planting the natives around the lake on the property. We have loved the opportunity to 'give back' to our community, and we look forward to spending the morning there.
