SVA Schools: Volunteer Kit 19 Reviews

A great kit to get the students really thinking about other people and what they can do in their local community....and sometimes, further afield. This year we have groups of students volunteering their time , effort and expertise in many situations. Dog walking, beach clean -up, dune planting, bird feeders for hospice garden, gifts of gratitude, adopt an animal etc. Students are very proud of their efforts and the joy it brings them and the people they help. A great kit!!

We were so ready for this unit of work and it tied in nicely with both Term 3 and 4's concept for us (finding a need, serving others, showing God's love and provision). However, we ran out of time to get our project (Kids Care Kits - helping our local preschool) totally completed so finishing it up in the next two weeks. I think the SVA unit is better geared for the higher year levels - Year 5 up. It has some very complex concepts, print heavy and hard ideas to break down and grapple with and it needed a lot of teacher direction/intervention. This was not a bad aspect of the unit but not something I tend to gravitate towards as I try to scaffold and grow independence. I would not hesitate to do this again but would attempt it with older students. Brilliant resource, full of heart and purpose, in helping to teach our young ones to look for opportunities to help others, outside of themselves. Limited in terms of how much 7-9 years can do for themselves on the flip side too. Bless you all and thanks again.

The Year 7&;8 students from Iona College have committed to engaging with our elderly community by creating three types of gifts. Something to share with their person, something to give and something to ask. Our school motto of Love, Joy, Peace was the inspiration behind our choice of project. The students have worked enthusiastically and thoughtfully to design and create the different items. The SVA kit has been very useful to work through the process of deciding on our project and our group structure.

Hi, this was a wonderful kit to use as it empowered the learners to take action and put themselves out there and be leaders. Please find pictures attached in a separate email. Thanks, Kyle Jean-Louis

What a great kit. The children were engaged and had a clear vision of what to do. We had great ideas and everyone was involved.

We used this kit with our School Council &; they loved the ownership of coming up with ways to support our community. They helped in gardens and dog walked as part of their 'service'. thanks for the great resource.

Hi Just a query, I did post my photos and write up on the School Kit page on 14 November. One of my friends did also like the page but I could not locate it for some reason. I did a search and found individual random photos from my post but not the entire post. Wonder what I've done wrong. I have posted before for Not Part of My World and that worked perfectly. Please advise, do I re-post. Anyway my class loved this kit. They were so driven and were so excited to plan and carry out all by themselves. They pitched their plan/ ideas to the principal. Made the call to the rest home, made all the arrangements. Put a concert together and performed for the old folk. Was very fulfilling. Thanks so much for the kit. Regards Sandra Moonsamy

It was a great kit but due to time constraints and my senior class buddy class partner's teacher being out of action for most of the term it was difficult for my little Year 1 class to do much. H0wever, we just made a commitment to take care of the school environment beyond our immediate area and put in a weekly effort in both the grounds and garden areas. Looking forward to being able to do next project which was designed especially for junior kids.
