What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
Letters from afar We had a number of project be affected by the covid-19 levels. Visiting the residence of the Kaitaia Rest Home with special morning tea and singing waiata, and volunteering at the food bank and distributing free lightbulbs with the Salvation Army. We made contact with the Rest Home to see what we could do and a nurse in the Dementia Ward wanted students to write to the residence, as they had a post box with never anything in it. The student wrote personalized letters to the residence and included one of their favorite stories each week. Our class wrote about their camp and how they learnt to surf, they enjoyed writing to them and understood that they would not get a reply to their letters- Dementia researched. The residence looked forward to the letters being read to them and the students stories were well received. Unfortunately, no photos or videos were permitted of the residence listening to the students letters. We will continue to write letters for their post box.

While this was an awesome resource, due to the age and stage of my class we weren’t able to really benefit fully from the learning around volunteering that came with it! However, it was an awesome way to encourage collaboration and problem solving with my own adaptation and mini project within our school and class community.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We kept our project in school due to the age of our children. We have a really messy school at times so we looked at how we could clean up our school. The children made posters and we went on EMU walks.
