This was such a great project. Students were 'hooked in' right from the start. We began with learning about how the SVA came about and the interest level was high. There were so many discussions and questions from the kids. Then we started to look at ideas about how we could 'give back'and EVENTUALLY we got onto collecting and sharing ideas. We had just been to a local, newly established outdoor education centre and the kids made a connection to that trip and decided that they wanted to raise some funds to go towards something at the centre. The centre is in our local community and they decided that raising funds towards something would build a stronger connection for them. They then set about deciding on the 'HOW' of raising this money. After much discussion one group put forward the idea of bringing in and selling unused and unwanted (but tidy) toys from home and selling them to students at school. What a success! They planned, advertised and organised a 'Shop Day' where the rest of the school purchased their 'toys'. The Senior School raised $450.10 which has since been donated to the Otatara Outdoor Education Centre for them to purchase something that can used by other groups of students who visit the centre. On the day of the sale all students had 'roles' and we even has Security Staff to make sure the little ones (juniors) didn't get trampled! We had kids setting up, advertising, promoting, selling and of course the big moment where we tallied up how much we raised. The students can't wait for our next visit to the centre to find out exactly how the money was spent.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? I completed the SVA kit in 2018 with Year 5 /6 students, which was really successful. However, this year I found it much harder to gain traction. I am unsure whether that was down to the kit, or that the older kids were more independent. Returning to scho

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our school sits in the middle of town, after the weekend there is a lot of rubbish. They made posters to remind the community, who use our grounds to put rubbish in the bins or take it home with them. feedback from the community around this was positive.

It was a great kit, the tamariki loved the badges and spent 3 weeks on rubbish around the school. They continued even after we had finished the unit. parents talked about the messages the kids were coming home with.

As many of these projects are still being undertaken, the true impact cannot be calculated, however our students have raised over $700 for Child Cancer, delivered many items to the SPCA, and have had thank you letters from the local primary school. What type of project did your class undertake? Food Bank Project, Fundraising, Greenspace Project, Other , Project for Those in Need
This was our first year taking part in the Student Volunteer Army. As a team of approximately 90, students identified problems in our local community that they could help with. With support from the SVA kit, possible solutions were analysed, resulting in a range of actions. We had students conducting beach clean ups, conducting ";Wig Wednesday"; for Child Cancer, cleaning up vandalism around the school, visiting local primary schools to teach sport, and collecting donations for the SPCA (just to name a few!!). Many of these actions are still in place, with some still to be completed.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The community impact of our project was that we were able to support our local community pantry and food bank with other 200 non-perishable food items.

What type of project did your class undertake? Food Bank Project
Room 17 at Te Kauwhata Primary School really enjoyed getting behind the SVA initiative, and finding a project that would have a great impact on our local community. The students settled on running a food bank at the school to support our Local Community House Pantry which support families in need. The kit itself was well produced and the support material was easy to follow. Students loved completing the skills survey to determine their roles and the badges to match really sealed the deal. It was great to see the students step-up, and start taking real leadership.

We have really enjoyed this kit as a whole team. It was the motivation we needed to finally do a volunteer project we have been meaning to organise. The kit was easily laid out and offered many options for ways to help others, the community or even our local environment. We have adopted a lot of these principles into helping in small ways around the school, at home and in our community. The children loved choosing an organisation, organising what we needed to collect, how to manage the collections and then reaching out to others in need. I think this is a lesson they will always remember and cherish. Kia kaha

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Working with the older students made the event memorable for younger students and they are now aware of how much rubbish that is left around our school. We shared the findings with the school at assembly and we now have a school challenge to reduce the am

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
The level of the kit was a little above the junior class that had been signed up. We also had Little Garden League kit arrive so we gave that priority. One of our Yr 6,7,8 classes were doing environmental inquiry projects so the kits was offered to them for a team that were working on reducing rubbish in our school. We have a farm surrounding our school so litter is a real concern for us. The senior group used aspects of the kit and involved my Yr 1/2 class in a rubbish challenge around the school. it was a super tuakana teina time. It is something that has raised awareness of the class and has had a positive impact on our views on litter even though we didn't use the resource directly.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Part of our volunteering project was within our school community and the teachers really appreciated all the work the students did to support them. Another part was to support communities outside our school in need, such as a school in Kiribati. The stu

Once again a great plan to follow and fit in meaningfully to what we were focusing on as a school. Our term focus was Student Agency and leadership in intermediate age children and looking outside ourselves to help others.
