We have finally completed the SVA unit this week and WOW! Due to COVID-19, we have had our ups and downs but the students were ever so determined to serve the community by hosting a school disco to fundraiser for their chosen charity and to contribute towards a Xmas hamper for struggling families. Thank you SchoolKit for the wonderful opportunity!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our targeted community was the elderly. Because of the lockdown levels changing during this kit's dates, we were unable to carry out the activities like we had planned. We have just been able to drop off the letters now that the restrictions have lifted.

The students were extremely excited when this kit was introduced to them. They loved the idea of being able to take part in a project that would impact others in some way. Unfortunately Covid had other ideas for us. Because of the restrictions put in place at alert level 2, our plans had to change. In order to adapt, we decided to create a project that the whole class could contribute to that would help others from afar, people who are vulnerable in our community: the elderly. We decided to write letters to them because they had become so isolated during lockdown. We had hoped to deliver our letters to the rest home but were unable to until recently. We are really looking forward to hearing back from some of them (we have put lined paper and envelopes in the letter kits so they can write back to us!) We loved the idea of this kit but it was unable to come to fruition (on an individual level anyway) because of constraints placed on us because of Covid.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We knew we had our annual Calf Club and Gala day coming up, along with hosting group day, which we had 6 other schools and their animals in attendance. So the students decided that it would be great if we renovated our tired and very boring looking lunch

Wonderful kit, which had all our students of our tiny rural school involved. We had year 1-7 students involved in our project. The students loved the resources and motivated them to participate and take their roles seriously.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The school and the neighbourhood are looking neater. The children have also gone home and have encouraged their families to keep their street clean.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
My Year 1 and 2s were able to plan who would be in charge of each role and helped make sure each part of the job was carried out well. I had monitors which rotated weekly to monitor and clean school litter. As a class we went outside the school to clean the streets but a detailed plan was created first with the children.

It is such a great initiative but I think it is too involved and difficult with Year 2. We are still in the planning stages of going to a Kindy to do some planting and outdoor tidying work. The kids just require a lot of teacher input.

We kept it simple this year and volunteered our services to run the 'Kids Vote' for the 2020 elections within the school. We organised teams to fulfil different roles - sharing information about local candidates with our school community - the students decided a 'billboard' scavenger hunt would help other students take notice and begin to ask questions about our local candidate. One group was in charge of setting up the library as the polling station - fantastically decorated with orange balloons, posters, ballot boxes. One group where in charge or organising and distributing roles for the voting. Our final group where the 'counters' who sorted, counted checked and rechecked the local candidate and party votes (great maths!)

Has made our kids more social action minded. They also came to realise that even though they are just kids they can still make a difference. We are still working through and they are very keen.
