This kit was excellent for encouraging students to volunteer in a project that they felt was important, and in a way that was student-led. The system for finding the best roles for individual students was great and enlightening - many found they were better suited to different roles than what they thought. I felt that the project made a positive difference to our local environment.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our project will have an ongoing impact on our community as we take responsibility for an area of our local waterway, watering our native plants, clearing rubbish from the area and a general tidy up.

We linked the SVA kit to the Water kit from last term by following up the Water Quality Testing in our area. Groups took on different projects including: riparian planting along the Manuherikia River, painting around storm drains to make the community aware of rubbish going down the drains and creating storm drain traps to catch litter going into the drain system. It was great to link these two kits.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We spent a day planting native trees to keep a local river clean and as a class planted over 300 tress over a day. The student could literally see their impact at the end of the day and were thrilled.

First of all, I loved how polished this kit was. The quality of the resources and additional incentives such as badges, wrist bands, and classroom sticker were excellent, which meant the students felt they had joined a quality organisation and really become part of the SVA. I also really liked how the plan broke the learning down into achievable chunks. The unit tied in really well to learning we had done earlier in the year around ";Kindness in the Face of Adversity"; as well as the global Covid-19 pandemic. My only small criticism (which is always there with teaching!) is that because the students wanted to make a big impact in the community and go off-site, the unit dragged out over a longer time then expected and although the ";safety team"; could handle safety on the day, going off-site requires a considerable amount of pre-planning and paperwork by the teacher. Overall, we really enjoyed the unit and felt that the students gained a great deal of benefit from it.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The people in the village appreciated the students' volunteer actions around their gardens and around the marae. We are thinking of repeating this action once every term because it brings our community closer together and gets parents and whanau involved

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project, Project for Those in Need
We were planning a trip to our local village to learn about housing and part of it was visiting the marae. The children were talking about helping around the marae and came up with many good ideas to get involved, like gardening, weeding, picking up rubbish, watering plants, cleaning the marae kitchen, singing songs and reading books. They planned and organised their equipment and even took down flowers and fruit to share with the people in the village.

A great kit - really inspired some students to do further volunteering and encouraged others to think about others rather than just themselves.
