I thought that the idea behind the kit was really great. The idea of volunteering and giving back to the community. To make it work with our programme and what we had going on we organised a toy sale and then used the profits to support a local environmental programme (were we are a research group). I found that some of the roles were really useful and others we made do without. Thanks for yet another fantastic motivating resource School Kit.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The studes painted drains with reminder murals to ensure that only rain goes down the drain. We are a rural school and we can see the beach that our storm water drains into. The studetns were motivated to protect the marine environment after seeing waste

What type of project did your class undertake? Fundraising, Project for Those in Need
Last year we did a fundraiser for the Brook Sanctuary here in Nelson, as part of learning about our local environment for Inquiry. We raised over $500 and were really excited to share our cheque with them and to hear how it could help them! This was not part of the School Kit so we were pleased to see the changes for this year. This year we have found the local charity “Helping Families” who support families in our community through providing clothing, furniture and support. One things they do each year is provide Christmas boxes for children from these families. The shoe boxes are wrapped in Christmas paper and are filled with various items to suit the age and gender. The students in our class decided to do a fundraiser (bake sale, chocolate raffle, chocolate cake raffle and “Guess how many snakes are in the jar”) and then use the money collected to buy items to put in the Christmas boxes. As we are doing advertising this term, it lends so perfectly! Students are making posters, creating posts for school social media, jingles for our radio station and the school intercom, and presentations to promote our sale for the school assembly. Students are also contacting local media to see if they can come and share what they have been up to. The students have taken on their roles and are working together to make this event happen!!
