Really solid resource to get kids thinking about the variety of roles and skills required to get a job done. As a class we have done volunteering before. However, though using the SVA Kit learners showed greater enthusiasm take ownership of a communal area and make it better!

What type of project did your class undertake? Food Bank Project
It was challenging this year with Covid Alert levels to come up with a project. The students did get a great sense of satisfaction from knowing they were helping others, especially having seen on the news the number of people who were struggling to feed themselves and family due to Covid-19 and the loss of jobs associated with that.

What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
Our class really enjoyed making something for someone else. We had been focusing on how we can help people and influence how they feel by making an effort to be kind and caring. Room 6 decided that people at our local rest home might feel lonely after covid restrictions so we wrote letters, made gifts and art to send as a care package to brighten up their day.

A great kit to get the students thinking about those in need and ways to help and support people or the environment whether it is gathering food for the food banks or collecting rubbish. Our class of 5 year old students decided that it would be great to make cards for the elderly people in a neighbouring rest home; in their words ";to make them feel happy and loved and know that we are thinking of them"; The resources in the kit were great that the students with support could map out and think about the steps needed for the project to work; it also reinforced our focus for the second half of the year which is :working cooperatively with othersboth in small and large groups. The students designed and made cards, some making more than one! They wrote a short description of themselves which was included in the card. The project outline at the end wouldn't let me write a complete outline.

This is a project that I love and have done for the past couple of years. It was my first time with a junior class so I was a bit worried about what they might come up with but they had so many ideas!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Empowering our tamariki to pay it forward, combined with their attitude of gratitude had a positive impact on all of us, our whānau and our community. As always, the SVA pack was jam packed with high quality resources and an extremely user friendly teacher notes for reference. Our project provided multiple opportunities for our group of tamariki to engage in culturally responsive, authentic and meaningful learning with wellbeing at the heart.
