This kit was the springboard for a community project. We first investigated the SVA, then different ways that we as a class could volunteer or give back to our community. The class were most interested in working in the community and having an environmental impact. Following the Christchurch earthquakes there has been a decline in beneficial insects due to many spaces been turned into grass spaces. We contacted a local entomologist and investigated 'Bug Hotels'. Each student in the class made a prototype of a bug hotel and the entomologist came to school to critique and suggest modifications. We are now at the stage where our class SVA are working with volunteer adults to construct permanent bug hotels to place in the local community with signage so people know what these structures are.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our little project was based around the wellbeing of our students at our school. They gave up some of their lunchtimes and ran a jump jam club outside for our other students to join in and have some fun.

Unfortunately from our end we had a very short amount of time to fit this unit in. We attempted to get through as much of it as we could but with they way this year has been, we just found that the timing for us wasn't right. However the concept of this unit did fit well into our NPDL plan for citizenship (but we also had another school kit from the previous term that we hadn't done and had to include this into the term. COVID has definitely impacted how we are running things.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The students developed and much stronger sense of community and their part within it. It also made them more inclined to volunteer in the future. Our local community will benefit from this as the area will be safer and more enjoyable to be in.

Loved the kit. My students really are enjoying the process of organising and running the event themselves. They enjoyed the aspect of doing this so much they in fact want to do another one before the end of the term. Our main project is a clean up around our local community. However the second project we were looking at was a thankyou for our local 1st responders - baking, cards, etc. as well as taking afternoon tea to our local retirement homes and playing bingo with them. The students have decided that we should do both. Our main project will be in week 5 of this term - then we are away to camp - then they want to do the other project - Thankyou and Food - when we get back in week 7.

The kit had some great buy in from my students. It worked amazingly well with our inquiry into the Sustainable Development Goals. They appreciated that they were able to lead the discussion around ideas and select their project. The students especially liked have specific roles within the project.

What type of project did your class undertake? Fundraising, Project for Those in Need
The students came up with the idea of helping less fortunate kids in the community (thinking of the impact of Covid on local families). So they chose the Christmas Shoe Box appeal. They loved the job application process and are all taking their roles seriously. The Liaison group wrote to the school principal outlining their plan and requesting permission to go ahead with it. The project is not complete at this stage but is well under way. The fundraising day will take place hopefully next week and the wrapping and packing of the gifts will be ongoing after that.

The kit was very supportive in the student's learning around roles in a group and how to approach people. The kit also brought an awareness of the world beyond their own personal lives. They have a greater understanding of needs within the community that affect various people.

We have been slow to get started with this kit but my class is now very excited about our service project which will take place on November 16th. It took a long time to settle on the charity we wanted to support and - with so many other things going on - it fell by the wayside in term 3. This term, though, momentum has picked up. The students enjoyed analysing their skills using the sheets provided and have all applied for and been given their roles. Now that the power has been fully transferred to the students (they are a small class of Year 7 girls) they are relishing in the activities and are coming up with some great ideas. They are wearing the badges and wristbands - they seemed to give extra motivation - and have set goals for the amount they want to fundraise and are doing things such as creating a fitness programme (we are doing a 16km sponsored hill walk) and making a website to communicate information. Looking forward to being able to share results of the outcome!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We were able to help many whānau in our house at school with the funds raised, the main thing this was used for was helping to pay the cost for camp- meaning 6 students who were not going to be able to be a part of our school camp could come.

Great resource- that allowed what had been a kind of messy process in the past to one with a much clearer roles where everyone was able to be authentically part of the project
