Due to be being unable to take school trips out of the school grounds (covid-19) we focussed on building the tuakana-teina relationships within our younger buddy class. The children (Year 3 and 4) had to plan 2 afternoon sessions for the younger students. The session had to cater for up to 6 students for 40 min. The children planned the session and then shared their idea with the class who gave them feedback. They then ran the 2 afternoon sessions. We had puppet making and a story, cupcake decorating, treasure hunt, outdoor games, colouring and making paper dogs. The students had to gather all the materials they needed and run the session without the teachers help. What an amazing time they had and it was great to see then developing their leadership skills. This has lead to regular buddy reading sessions with the 2 classes.

My students absolutely loved this project. We ended up extending it well into this term as they didn't want to stop writing stories to go into our book.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We are still in the process of finishing the project due to standstills out of our hands. We have included all our classes from our kura as well as outside agencies, so far the impact is positive.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
The class have been really engaged in this process. They have enjoyed being part of different roles within a company. The best part was the personality form as to where they would be best suited to the roles. Some of the students did not see themselves in the roles that the test chose for them. They embraced it in the end. As a Kaiako, I have really enjoyed watching our class of 41 really working together for one common cause.

Better connection with our neighbours (SPCA), wich allowed our girls the opportunity to develop empathy, as well as use their creative skills to make toys for the animals. We also raised some money and this has encouraged some students to also sign up for

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? It was great to get the children thinking of others and thinking outside the square. They had to develop empathy for the rest home residents in terms of what it would be like to have restrictions in the rest homes and no family visits. The openness of the

Our tamariki loved the SVA kit. The class looked into the needs of our local community. With Covid restrictions in rest homes our action was writing letters to the rest home residents to give them contact and enjoyment. The children also made envelopes which they decorated to bring a smile to the elderly. They loved the wristbands!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The elderly community we visited had really suffered from the lack of visits due to lockdown so seeing their faces light up was awesome! Students were able to see the impact their actions can have and also saw the importance of connecting with others.

We chose to link our SVA unit with our wellbeing unit we did earlier in the year. The students voted and eventually settled on focusing on the connecting part of wellbeing, especially as we were focusing on what lockdown affected the most. Students eventually voted down to volunteering at a retirement home as they knew how affected their own grandparents had been. We went along and students did activities such as reading to residents, playing card games, performances and learning to play bowls. It was an awesome experience for the kids and they were so excited from the get go!
