Our school has had a SVA programme set up for 5 years or so after the ChCh earthquake SVA was set up (Sam Johnson has been to visit us in the early days) so we value the importance of this programme. We run weekly SVA programmes for our Year 6-8 students ranging from helping with 3 local pre-schools, The Hospice Shop, cooking for Ronald McDonald family room at Invercargill Hospital, farming group, ICT teaching group to Year 5, PAL's (playground activity leaders etc This kit was great to remind us of other avenues we could explore in the future also. Through this unit we choose to focus on making food parcels for our Essential Workers through Lockdown. The students made muffins, biscuits and sweet treats for our local New World, Medical Centre, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, RD 1 and 2 local dairies)

This has been an amazing opportunity for our kids to discover their passion for volunteering. The students were very engaged and this has pushed to find ways to volunteer outside of our project!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Cleaner streets around our school, acknowledgement from passers by (tooting). This project had an impact on the children as well as they were amazed at the amount of rubbish they had picked up.

The children had been working towards the annual planting at Te Ngaio Beach but due access issues I had to change plans. The change coincided with our town having a Clean up Week, so we joined this instead. With gloves and bags kindly given by the I-Site team we headed out and picked up rubbish from the streets that surround our school.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Those using our local park now have a saver environment for their dogs. It has also led the group to targeting the underlying problem and think about how we can educate the community in future.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
We enjoyed working through this kit. I was able to have different groups working on different projects to cater to our community needs. Gave a very clear pathway for the student to follow and while not all students completed the whole process, those who did had great success.

What type of project did your class undertake? Other , Staying in Touch from Afar
This kit was really good with all the different things that were provided. I did find that some of it was a bit hard for year 2 children but the year 3's took charge and were good. The students loved cleaning the ambulance at St John and helping clean the station. We also had a visit from the fire engine, but we didn't get to clean that. This unit allowed us to look into volunteering and some of the groups that were around. We also had an optional task at home, which over half the children did. This included recycling and cake making for the retirement house, helping with morning teas at events and general farm help in the holidays.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The response from our community was incredible once we sent out newsletters about what was being done. The elderly really appreciated having letters (handwritten letters) which they said provided positive support to them coming out of COVID where things s

Another great resource provided by School Kit that opened up great opportunites for community learning and also conversations about giving back. The tamariki had many suggestions of how they could help their community. Our Kura is well supported by our community and so it was awesome to be able to open conversations about giving back. We decided that we would do two things - spend time with elderly, taking them letters and some kai and also making a rongoā garden for our school and community to use. Both projects were big and we divided our class into two for that reason and had two project teams. The rongoā garden will be an ongoing project but it has started really well. We can't wait to have it available for our community. The resources provided were on target and really helped to make the project teams feel like official project teams. The little touches provided to help them identify their roles within the project were also helpful in engaging students and provided a platform for taking ownership of them. Great work!
