The Volunteer Kit is a dynamic resource for Year 1-8 students, blending learning with real-world action. It guides classes through identifying their passions, investigating community needs, and planning and executing a one-day volunteer project. This hands-on approach develops key skills in project management, teamwork, and social responsibility. With links to the Health & Physical Education and Social Sciences learning areas, the kit supports curriculum goals while fostering empathy and community engagement. Its proven reach—impacting over 100,800 students in 3,150 classrooms—speaks to its effectiveness. Available year-round, it’s a flexible, impactful tool for schools looking to inspire student-led action. Highly recommended for teachers wanting to combine meaningful community service with engaging, project-based learning.

What was the impact of your volunteering project on the targeted community? Our school and our small group has taken the time to learn why planting trees is so important. It has assisted a local farm owner with their goal to reduce carbon emissions and runoff into local waterways.
This was not like the other kits we have used from School Kit. It was heavily guided by discussion and student choices. Our senior akonga relished the opportunity to get out in our community, taking photos and thinking critically about what we could do to help out in our little town. As we were going through the find process we discovered that trees for survival had approached our school to see if we had a group of students who may want to volunteer to make a difference. We jumped at the chance and with the Trees for survival co-ordinator, we planned, orgainsed and acted! We spent a whole day planting a wetlands. We planted near a little stream braiding through a gully that was once grazed, sheltered from the winds. Our team of 14 students, and 6 adult helpers started with a loads of enthusiasm for the day after the induction and instructions. The site had no shortage of mud as it was right by a stream, and quickly the Kaponga School SVA Team got joyfully muddy up to their elbows and knees. After a good hour of planting, we sat down and talked about why it is important to restore areas by planting natives, and why we want to look after the health of our streams. Despite some rain in the forecast, which we were ready to brave, it ended up being a mostly nice day, however, the wind was very strong. 14 students and 6 adults planted 658 trees along a 720m waterway by 1:30pm. It was fantastic, everyone dug in and helped our environment. Part of the follow up was to also pot up the next 600 little baby trees, ready for the next group to plant the next forest.

What was the impact of your volunteering project on the targeted community? Our native bush area now has the plant labelled so students can know which are native and fun facts about them. The bird houses will bring birds to an area in our school which lacks biodiversity.

The SVA kit provided my class with a good discussion around what volunteering is before we discussed ways we wanted to help in our school. Students discussed options and what was required for it to happen.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We planted trees along the estuary at the local golf course. This also linked in with the Whitbait Connection learning that we were working on. We also worked as a SVA team to raise money for Daffodil Day. Finally we identified jobs that needed doing around the school and work as an SVA to complete these tasks.
