Walk the length of NZ 19 Reviews

4.6 Rating 237 Reviews
Walking the Length of New Zealand in progress. We worked in groups to work out what the different step counters were and how they worked. Some worked out how to ‘trick’ them! We measured and compared our step lengths, ironing out lots of measurement thinking along the way. Quite a bit of problem solving to be done now to work out how many steps it will take, and invite others to help us walk NZ in one day.

Wow! What an incredible way to get students excited, fit and learning at the same time. The other teachers in our pod also registered for and used the kit, and there was a lot of competition between the classes. The mathematical concepts taught through this kit were of great value to my class, and gave them a ";real life"; reason to apply their thinking skills.

We finally had the opportunity to complete the Walk the Length of New Zealand kit. The students really enjoyed taking part in it and had a very active day yesterday, running, walking, tennis and soccer. Our junior class came out and walked with us in the morning helping add 39000 steps and we had heaps of people in the community donate steps as well. All up we walked 1,535,405 steps, which we worked out got us halfway between Wellington and Kaikoura. Was such a great learning experience for everyone. Thanks School Kit.

Walking the length of NZ challenged my students problem solving skills. We didn’t make it to the bottom but the discussions we had were brilliant.

Thanks School Kit - another wonderful resource. We have enjoyed walking the length of New Zealand. We loved finding out about places when we detoured. The way it integrated across the curriculum meant we used it daily.

Room 4 are having a fantastic time making our way through the walk the length of NZ Kit. Last term we learnt lots about measurement when we measured our step size and found our class average. We also built on the skills we already had from participating in Track the Tanker to measure the length of NZ. We trialled the pedometers and we’re very surprised with the difference between them all!! Room 4 have designed the website, google form and advertisements for our Walk day which is set for November 8th.

Highly engaging topic, that got students active while also focused on maths! Students enjoyed calculating size of their step and using the information to follow how far we had covered on the map. We covered the length of NZ by walking over a few days.
