Walking the length of New Zealand in one day is providing such wonderful learning opportunities. Fun, fitness and friendships a while using our maths and English skills, we really are covering everything. Thanks so much for such a fun kit.

Room 6 at Sunnyhills School is loving their Walk the Length of New Zealand kit! We have explored conventional and unconventional units of measurement and been working on converting between units. We especially loved finding out our average step length so that we could calculate how many steps it would take each person in our class to walk the length of New Zealand. Next, we are going to find the perimeter of objects in our school and convert that into our personal steps.

We had a trial with the kit and have now partnered up with our maths department to use it next year in an integrated unit. We can do the practical activities in physical education and the measurement in maths. The students loved trialling the different resources and discussing the pros and cons of each one.

In Room 16 we’ve had so much fun using the step counters for walk the length of NZ. We have been motivated to increase our step count for the day and finding out how many laps of the cycle track we can do. We have not yet done the whole challenge but we are on our way!

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. In one week we did 1,400,000 steps! So it would take our class 2 weeks to walk the length of New Zealand!
Kids loved this kit. Experimenting with the different pedometers was a great maths activity. They loved seeing how far we walked each day, especially when we walked to the town library. Watching our distances as we added them together to see how far we had gone in a day and a week was a great way to see towns around us and throughout the country as we walked the length of NZ.

We certainly had lots of fun with the 'Walk the Length of NZ' kit. Some great measuring and discussion took place. The children are all so much better at using a metre ruler now!

Such a great kit to have in the lead up to cross country. Kids were so motivated to use the different measurement units. We also used it for maths measurement unit looking at standardised and non standardised measurements. A successful kit which was able to be used in many areas of the curriculum. Thank you.

Walk the Length of New Zealand, what a great challenge. We are an area school so we set up a walkathon and had families and students from right across the school come and walk laps for us. It was lots of fun and we had perfect spring weather for this. This was another fun experience and we loved the learning, team work and exercise we got out of this kit. Thank you.
