In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? We could have done this differently by involving our families, and that would have had a wider community impact. In the end we decided to promote it across the classes, and involve them in the walk instead. We also invited some parents (during school time

We decided to take this on as an exercise to prepare for camp for our whole syndicate (90 kids). Our class worked on the first part of the challenge (measuring our steps, working out the length of NZ in km and then converting to steps). Students really enjoyed this part, and the maths proved really interesting and challenging. We then planned a bush walk where the other students could join us (during school hours). As we all walked the same walk (1.5 hour hill climb) we used my fit bit to work out how many steps we did for that day, then multiplied that by 90 people (that was how many students and teachers walked).

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? Bing in COVID, we decided that it will be a better idea to do this as a class, because community involvement is limited.
We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. We did not count steps, but kilometres. This motivated our students more. We have completed 1200 kilometres so far. As a class, we are still trying to keep fit and go for a walk everyday and we add up these kilometres. Hopefully by the end of the term we

This is a fantastic kit. When we started, our kids were not that excited about being active. But the more we spoke about it, and the more they got involved, the more they enjoyed it. Great kit and great being active.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? We engaged by inviting our community to help in some way. Marshals who provided a safe walking area, parents, grandparents, Aunties and uncles all walking to a common reason.

We started our day in the rain, the course we were walked changed, we rustled up umbrellas for marshals and found a lead vehicle with a flashing light on the roof to keep our walkers safe. Our walkers came from all over our community. It is surprising how many people are interested in walking even in the rain hail and at times sleet. We had walkers from all over New Zealand supporting and registered to our school. This initiative was successful for every little thing it was based on. Healthy movement, gathering together as one for a common reason and just whakawhanauatangi and getting to know our community. Those are the ripple affects of a successful unit of work, thank you School kit this is not the first time I have entered into a unit like this which you have provided. Nga mihi nui kia koutou katoa

We have been a little late with our Walk the Length of NZ kit, and still aren't finished, as we've been spending A LOT of time preparing for our musical Aladdin Jr (which should have been last term but you know....2020 and all that!!!!!)!!

the students really engaged with finding ways of keeping track of their steps and became confident users of technology to help them. We enjoyed the hands on mathematics and local geography aspects of this kit .

An exciting and motivating kit for the children but unfortunately we weren't able to give it as much time as we would have liked due to a lot of other things on. The children loved measuring their steps and seeing the variation. Also good to check tgood to check the accuracy of some of the step counters that children wear.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? We took four classes out to hike Rangitoto Island as a culminating day to count our steps. Everyone loved it! Parents were invited to come along too so we had a few involved. We encouraged whānau to get out walking in preparation for the longer day

We loved the concept, and the practical ideas for counting our steps. Kids LOVED the measuring idea, and were blown away when they saw the numbers adding up on a spreadsheet. Enthusiasm increased when they saw how quickly the numbers could jump if they did an extra lap or two. Term 4, and they are still asking if we can go out and do our steps walking.
