In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The kids went further and wanted to learn about longfin tuna and how they live in our local waterway and the significance that it has to longfin tuna.
We loved it! The kids enjoyed learning all about the invertebrates especially.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? As mentioned above, I taught this unit as a literacy programme, rather than a science programme. THe areas blended together perfectly. We learned about procedural texts which, as you can imagine, worked perfectly with the step by step resource cards you p

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? As mentioned already, I feel inspired to build science into my writing/reading programmes. In addition, we spent a further week looking at the impact human's choices have on the health of a river - the kids were fascinated!

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? My school's cultural narrative involves a river, so the students were able to relate the unit to our cultural narrative. Other than that, we didn't really dig into the cultural significance all that much, regretfully.
This was a well-written, well-resourced unit that the year 7/8 students really loved. We spent two solid weeks (during literacy times) leading up to the visit, then a further week writing up our experiments. This year, our school focus is writing and, as a result, we did a school-wide survey just a couple of weeks ago. A large proportion of my students hailed this writing unit as their favourite of the year (over Get NZ Writing and As I Saw it, amongst other ignitions). It has inspired me to build science into more literacy lessons, as we get so little time to explore science during the busy week. I have kept the resources and fully intend to repeat the activity in future years.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We engaged in many discussions about the purpose or use of freshwater. Who owns it, where does it come from, how is freshwater used, who pollutes it, etc. We discussed the importance of fresh water to community groups.
Thank you, School Kit, because it has been a year of the new and exciting learning we've had to use the Water testing kit a little differently. Our Year 3 &; 4 team were unable to go offsite to use the water testing kit as it was intended. Instead, our senior school have shared their findings and learning with us, as they were able to go offsite to do the testing. We have purchased a water sample testing kit which we've used in our space to actually test samples of water from various locations for Ammonia and Nitrate levels. We have also used the existing kit as a resource students can take home/borrow to use with their families at home or when they are off exploring..

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Water is our life source!
We fully embraced the challenge, contacted our families to donate their steps, walked every opportunity we could but we came up short. That didn't matter though as it got families thinking about walking more. Many responded with they had parked further away when visiting the supermarket etc etc. Mapping our walk was super fun and figuring out where we'd got to with our steps.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? we are very close to the Waikato River near the mouth to the ocean. Most were aware of how the river starts in Taupo and the changes it go through from clean clear to dirty water
Because of the terms being sporadic we struggled to complete all activities to the best ability. The areas we were able to complete the class was engaged and were able to discuss and analyze , which was great for them.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Through doing the stream investigation, it prompted discussions around the use of water and how different cultures value it in different ways. The kit itself didn't lead to understanding the cultural significance of water.
The kit offered students the motivation towards wanting to know how to use the different tools within it. It- tied in nicely with our studies about fresh water and connecting with our local whenua and awa. Invertebrate identification would be more helpful if there was a picture resource to go with the descriptions.
