“Great resource with the required equipment. Would have liked clearer information about the size of river as I only found out about the width when reading the cards in depth. I chose a stream instead of a river and it was too small for us to gather information about the creatures in there. Thanks for the resource!”

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The pepeha videos etc were great as the students were able to understand the significance of water and identify with how important it is to them personally as well. This enabled them to realise how we must look after our water supplies - great timing with

“This kit was/is fantastic. The students loved creating their own pepehas and proudly display them in their homes. The experiment and process was a lot of fun and very achievable for all of our students. What really stood out to us was how determined they are to make a change to the environment following this kit - we have a whole new bunch of eco-warriors :)”

“Wow wow wow! What a wonderful kit. The kit tied in perfectly with our inquiry unit as we focused on the waterways within our area. The students were fully engaged and used the tests independently with ease. It was a great morning experiencing our local creek. The students were able to draw some great conclusions and have kept the test equipment safe as they want to retest the creek in the summer months to note the difference in data.”

We were able to learn about Māori perspectives around water and how this differs from mainstream beliefs. That wai is a mauri (life force) , its significance in our pepeha and the many types of wai and uses.

“This was a great kit that the class really loved and were keen to see the results of. We started looking locally at our waterways and the students were highly engaged. Unfortunately, we didn't get to finish it due to COVID-19 and the students were disappointed, however we intend to do it in our own time sometime this term.”
