“Visited Grandpa Greene's 23/07/2024 with my sister in law and Nephew. We ordered a Caesar Salad which cost £13.50 each it was very dull and boring the pouched egg was more like a hard boiled egg the ice cream was expensive and not much to rave about. We complained to the waiter she apologized and still took our money. We will not be visiting again even if it was free.”
“Myself and my boyfriend booked a table in an igloo on a Sunday afternoon (to see if it would be a suitable place to hire out for an event) , there were quite a few cleared empty tables when we arrived so we thought we’d be seated straight away. Spoke to the young lady at the kiosk who then told us it will be a 15 min wait , she rang me after about 10 minutes and seated us at one of the tables that was previously empty and we noticed in the time we were waiting she was just stood talking and laughing with the other girls working. The food was AMAZING and we honestly couldn’t fault it but the customer service was atrocious, nobody came to ask if we needed any more drinks or cleared our table until we asked and we had to google the menus and go to the kiosk to order dessert and more drinks after asking the girls who were still stood laughing if they could please clear the plates and take an order to which they laughed and said in a minute however they did not come. Tables weren’t cleared and the girls were just stood laughing however, one waitress was helpful and friendly and deserves all the praise (she had a butterfly hand tattoo) unfortunately I did not get her name but the customer service she delivered was amazing (offered me a spoon for my hot pot without me asking and she cleared our plates away after watching the other girls laugh and not do it). Unfortunately the lack of customer service has completely put me off returning let alone use for an event as I really hoped I would love it.”
“Very disappointing booked a dome experience for Christmas festival afternoon tea, we turn up with our 2children who’s surprise it was, to be told it wasn’t available until 12 afternoon, online booking let me book at 11am (no other times available) I even messaged them to let them know how many people it was for etc…
apparently I was left a voice mail the night before from the manger about times (never got it) and no email sent, which you think an email would be sent if they wanted to contact you.
The manager couldn’t even face me and apologise as she made her waitress talk to me who in November clearly told to me ALL dome reservations in December are afternoon tea regardless of times! Even when I asked her if I book in the morning we’ll still get the Christmas experience which she replied yes!
They didn’t even offer me if I’d like to return at 12 which I would if happily done but just to be disregarded about the whole thing made me so angry, especially when people save up money for these experiences and make it apart of their family Christmas time!”
“Very disappointed. Service shocking, staff just stood around. Afternoon tea sandwiches were ice cold as though been in the fridge for hours. Would not recommend”
“Used to love Grandpa Greenes in Diggle..lovely food, beautiful setting but the last time we visited there were two dogs sat on the seats and no one did anything about it.Surely there should be basic hygiene rules ?This happened last year and we have never been back.”
“Very disappointed ! Drove a long way defo wasnt worth it we got there & asked 1 of the male member of staff who was there at the time if you’re still serving food to which he said yes we are half 4 is when we stop serving food & he directed us to the outside seating area we got there only to be told by the female staff with dark her that we cant be seated there as its closed now she was very polite... so we ended up sitting on the benches next to the canal & went to order food only to be told by the lady with blonde hair who was rude the attitude & her facial expressions were appalling told us we stopped serving food so we explained we’ve been told by the other member of staff we could & its only a toastie for the 6year who was with us & she refused & said 4:30 we stop serving but it wasnt 4:30 so how are you telling us you stop serving at 4:30 with that attitude ! Absolutely disgusting she was id never go back & wont recommend this place to no1 ! We left & didn't buy nothing”
“I’m afraid I won’t be going here again . I’d seen it had extended but very short staffed at brunch
Bad service
long waiting times and can’t accommodate a simple variant to the menu . It’s laughable if they serve toast and bacon and sausage why can’t I order sausage bacon with toast ????
Not cheap either . You’d expect more
Seems to me quiet young & inexperienced staff are left with no direction or authority or ability to communicate properly .
It’s a shame because it’s in a beautiful spot on the canal .
Such a shame
Very disappointing for my three grandchildren . Should have been a lovely treat for them and me their grandma 😳🥺🤯🥴
We ended up walking away . My four year old didn’t understand and was very upset”
“Called for a sandwich and coffee....... Great location. Order a sausage breakfast muffin, oh dear. Cheap and nasty salty sausages plus only dijon mustard which was rank. Won't be calling again.”
“Cannot get a response from a complaint made 2 weeks ago even after chasing.
I bought my sister an afternoon tea voucher for her birthday and she booked online to attend. When we arrived we were greeted nicely and sat down and I mentioned that I am vegetarian so if they could just do cheese or cheese and cucumber sandwiches that would be great, unfortunately the waitress said that they cannot make any amendments because all of the sandwiches are made for afternoon tea's in the morning (why?!). I then proceeded to ask how we were supposed to let them know then as it was not on the terms and conditions of the voucher and she said "usually people just write it in the "comments" box when booking" NO WHERE does this comments box say "Please inform us of dietary requirements/allergies"!! We questioned this and said that it doesn't say that anywhere and they just said we would have to swap sandwiches as my sister wasn't a vegetarian! I was then presented with the afternoon tea with all the meat and Vegetarian sandwiches together. HOW on earth has this matter been overlooked when the council give them their hygiene rating?! What would have happened if I was allergic to something?!
The staff members were unwilling to help and this really ruined my sister's birthday treat. When we were asked for feedback from the online booking my sister mentioned this issue and we have both since raised the issue with no response at all despite chasing it. I did not want to go writing a bad review, but as they haven't acknowledged the issue or changed anything I needed to warn other people who may have dietary requirements/allergies that apparently Grandpa Greenes think you have a crystal ball & it's tough luck if you don't!!
SO disappointed and £44 wasted as I barely ate anything and was left upset.”
“Waited 50 minutes for order whilst others arrived, ate and left. Rudely thrown off table b4 we'd finished our meal, manager rude and aggressive in public when objected, given discount but did not make up for bad service, way we were treated, not our fault manager couldn't efficiently organise cafe she knew it would be busy Good Friday bad management all round and unprofessional response to our complaints. Upset on what had been a special celebration. Never go again.”
“Wonderful place!
I came here for my friends hen party lunch on Friday and had such a lovely time that I brought my husband yesterday and we weren’t disappointed. The food and atmosphere is lovely and customer service is outstanding, thank you for such a lovely wecome.”
“We went for breakfast. Don’t sit in the conservatory as it’s way too bright.
My partner asked for the sweetcorn fritters but instead of poached eggs, to have scrambled eggs. They said they can’t make any changes. Which makes me think these are pre-prepared and reheated meals.
I had the poached eggs.
No orange juice in stock.
After scraping the mountain of soggy, boarder line expired spinach off the muffins and seeing the almost blue ham, we eat what we could manage and left.
Only the fact we had little time that morning kept us from going elsewhere.
Avoid for breakfast. Diggle Lock is a few minutes away and will be going back there next time.”
“Grandpa Greene's was an expensive and waste of a day out. By the time we arrived we were ready for some refreshments. We had driven some 25 miles to the place which in fairness is in a lovely setting but please be aware it is sited close to a canal and railway line so please look after your children and pets.
Well, we joined the queueing system which is a strange system of two queues but you have no idea which queue to join. The system is confusing.
When it is your turn to be directed as to what to do you will come across youngsters working there with two way radios trying to organise chaos. The management is nowhere to be seen. This is just the start of our miserable experience. We are shown to our seats in what resembled a dog compound with the amount of barking going on. Those poor frightened little creatures scared by all the activity going on.
We ordered our food, eventually, after the youngster reported her 'tablet' was faulty and she had to go and find another. The menu was limited. The four of us opted for sausage sandwiches. Some with fried eggs - big mistake!
Those that took their first bite ended up with a mess in their hands as the bread rolls collapsed because they could not support the contents. The sausages were 'tough' and very 'chewy'. The egg yolks dripped everywhere. The drinks never arrived and we were told it was their policy to bring drinks after the meal. My wife had to ask for them to be brought. This was the beginning of our 'synthetic' experience with their milkshakes. We decided to call it a day. "Lets have an ice cream" we thought. Synthetic mistake number two! The ice cream was barely palatable.
The last straw was being told we had to rejoin the queue for our ice creams! Well, that was it we quickly exited the place never to return. Alas.”
“We were very disappointed with our day out to Grandpa Greene's.
So that we don't appear to be people who complain just for the sake of complaining I would like to include the positive which is the location but please be aware you are near deep water with a canal and close by is a railway line.
The negatives:
1. The staff. They were mainly young people with no obvious seniority in place. The person in charge clearly was not the owner. When we complained for the reasons below we were offered a free ice cream!
2. The queueing system resembled a theme park and was disorganised. We were told to wait and nobody came back to us. After asking we were seated in what I can only describe as being like in a dog kennels. Constant barking from dogs, poor things, who were clearly not happy in this confined space full of activity.
3. The sub-standard food arrived. Sausage with skins that you could not chew. Bread buns that broke up and let the contents fall out.
4. The drinks arrived AFTER we had eaten what we could of the sandwiches. We were told "this is our policy". How do you eat sausage sandwiches of dry bread with tough skins without a drink?
5. The dogs barking and the poor food meant a quick exit. "Let's get an ice cream and just go" we thought. Then..... guess what?
6. We were told we had to join another queue similar to being in a theme park.
The young man was adamant we could not be served and we called for the manager to complain. Another young girl arrived and offered us a free ice cream. She was full of excuses about how busy they were and her attitude certainly did not help.
7. After waiting for the ice creams to be made by one slowly working employee we finally exited Grandpa Greene's never to return.
8. There was one surprise left for us. The ice cream was synthetic and not the lovely fresh ice cream which we often find sold now where you just have to have another. We just felt completely let down and had wasted a day out and a lot of money in the process.
We shall never return to this place.”
