Mountainwatch have always been informative and helpful. Zao Onsen however, is a little less travelled by Australians and MW were not as familiar with this area as they are with others. I found Zao's three main areas disconnected from each other. It was difficult to get around the entire resort without a lot of difficult traversing. The runs from the central "Rope Tow" for example did not get you back to the bottom of that tow but onto another area so getting home was tricky. The accomodation was good with most staff very obliging as is the custom in Japan. Some, however, were less inclined to help. The location of the resort was advertised as a short 5 or 10 minute walk to the lifts but this was not the case. The roads were steep and difficult in ski boots. The free shuttle service did not operate whilst we were there. Bonus was the amazing barista coffee at the snowboard rental. An unexpected pleasure.

MW helped us book a really great Hotel with wonderful hospitality in Nozawaonsen. Unfortunately they forgot to let us know that this lovely Hotel provided ski rental equipment and free ski locker storage to its guests with a 30% discount on rentals. This was very valuable information that we only received on arrival at Hotel after we had already made rental arrangements elsewhere. Communications from MW was minimal but we loved the Hotel we stayed at.

It was our first contact with Mountainwatch Travel. We picked them as snow expert to assist our family for our first skiing holiday. The accommodation at Hotel Sejour Mint was decent but I will totally not recommend the Japanese family room, it was located at the basement and we had to smell petrol fumes every night. The owner just said he was sorry and we slept with our doors open and left one day earlier. If you have chemical sensitivity, you need to be warned not to use this room. They were fully booked , so no other options were given to us. I slept partially on their sofa lounge on the first night. We had ski passes that covered the entire valley but as novice skiers, we were based at the beginners slopes at Iimori , so I think we could have been given a cheaper Iimori resort only pass for our family of five as they were significantly cheaper. As for the ski rentals, we were not aware that the helmets were not part of the rental, so paid a few more hundred dollars for 5 helmets across 4 days. I find communication via email with Steph just ok. Your company has the book the call service which I booked and called but no one ever pick up , so I had to resort to calling directly / emails. We enjoyed the snow but did not feel prepared by the company in assisting our first visit to Hakuba Valley for skiing.

Overall a good trip, though a few things that could improve for future ones. The choice of Hotels really needs to be far more pragmatic. For a Golden Snowmads guided tour, 3 flights of steep stairs & no lift for some clients Over 70 & their luggage was incredibly inappropriate. The trip is not cheap & the choice of hotels often reflected little value for money outlaid. Alexys, Steve & Colin were all instrumental though with their guiding & group management

Unfortunately this time round it seemed to be drama after drama. Not Mountain Watches fault. But the flights were changed, firstly from direct to outbound with stopover, adding 5hrs to journey ( no food added or anything). The return flight changed by a whole day, which didn't get picked up. So additional holiday day required and accommodation in Tokyo, which we couldn't really use arrive Sunday afternoon leave for airport Monday afternoon ( everything shut on Monday in Tokyo), more cost with airport transfers, more cost in airport carpark. Review of Hakuba, 12 years ago it was great, people couldn't do enough for you. Today, not the same atmosphere at all, if you want to drink with drunk Aussies it's for you. Has a Bali feel to it now. Good luck finding decent food now, restaurants are poor, terrible pizzas etc. You have to book, but often they are full, oddly Japanese options are limited. I would keep looking for a different ski experience and give Hakaba a miss.
