“We found a stray dog and took it to the vets to be scanned for a chip. It did find it but, being early on a Saturday morning, the systems the vets use could not identify it as a valid chip. Eventually they managed to track it to Smartchip, only to find that the details of the owner could not be found until 9.00am on Monday. This means that there is no way of tracing a dog back to its owners outside of the hours 9.00am-5.00pm Monday to Friday! Unfortunately we had no choice but to hand the dog to the dog warden who will only keep it for 3 days and even then would charge £60 release fee. I am sure this is not what responsible dog owners want.”
