“I purchased the Vela chair as I have a very small alcove between a hallway and the entrance to the master bedroom. A typical wheelchair can’t make the turn as the back wheels don’t rotate. Not being able to see the vela chair before purchasing,I purchased an office chair with a wheel base the same as the vela chair. It worked, but the wheelbase kept rotating and was just physically difficult for me to push and keep it straight. My husband was 6’2” before being hunched over by Parkinson’s and has a lot of issues with freezing and not being able to move. He finds this chair a little high for him to scoot and thinks that feature might work better if it was the lower chair, but likes the added height that actually lets him look down on things at the counter height eating area. I use the push bar and the foot rest and easily push him into the bedrooms and two bathrooms if he can’t move fast enough. The pushbar does interfere with the mechanism that lets the seat swivel to the left when the brake is on, but works ok if it is off. This has enabled me to avoid alterations to entryways that maybe would have worked, and the frustration of dealing with a company that didn’t really respond like Vela does.”

“The chair is not bad, and it significantly helped my wife. But for this money, it could be better. There are details that really need improvement. The armrests are too short. They should be much longer, and the length should be adjustable (similar to Herman Miller Aeron). The remote should be wireless; my wife cannot reach it where it is stored on the chair.”

“The VELA chair is ok. It serves the purpose pretty well, but we have a few suggestions. The person using the chair is large. She would feel more secure if the chair seat was a little deeper (longer) and the armrests were longer or positioned a little more to the front. Also, the footrest would be better if it extended a little further out in front.

“It moves around great - that part is perfect. But the armrests are much too short - I'm not sure why anyone would like them that short. If we can get them straightened out and get my husband comfortable with the seat, we will be able to keep the chair. I sure hope we don't have to return it because return shipping will be expensive, as well as the 20% restocking fee.”

“I really like the color of the seat. I don’t use the new chair because the arms are way to short making it to inconvenient for me to get up from a seated position.”

“We purchased this chair for my husband who has Parkinson's. He has trouble with balance, rising from a seated position and walking. He also has some dementia and memory problems so he has a problem finding the brake lever and remembering how to find the buttons to raise the chair. Perhaps if the brake leaver were more visible (he has trouble turning his body in the chair) or better located in his spacial view he would be able to find it more often.
We have been able to use this chair as a walker and it is more stable than other walkers. It is also quite heavy. Therefore, when he "seat walks" in the chair the back wheels spin and swing the rear end around to the side causing him to bump into things. Maybe if the back wheels could be locked into a straight line he could maneuver straight down the hallway.
We have found uses for the chair that are a little unorthodox. I added a deeper (14") mattress to his hospital bed which eliminated the use of the standard bed rails. So I use the chair backed up to the bed to serve as a bed rail at night which also gives him a stable rail to use getting out of the bed and a stable place to sit upon rising.
This chair also is handy to help him get out of a seated position. As we raise it, he can move forward to a standing position without very much assistance.
I think the chair is largely overpriced but the benefits for us have been very good and I continue to find easier methods to care for him using it.”
