This is an excellent standalone or starter set for Star Wars Armada. The game itself is fun and made simpler than many tabletop games due to use of special dice and tools. All of the ships besides the squadrons are painted so you can play straight away. And if you’re a hobbyist you can paint the squadrons in an evening yourself (photo). Overall, this is the most fun tabletop I’ve played in sometime and I have played many of the major ones like WH40k.

The thing I like about Armada the most is the fact you can buy the larger ships without breaking the bank

Bought this for my son after getting the super star destroyer for him. He absolutely loves it. Buying a few myself to play along and also to throw into some dioramas.

I was playing X-wing a lot when this first came out. I tried this and essentially packed all my X-wing things away. I LOVE this game. IMO, it is a way better game than X-wing. They have their differences and there are some things I wish Armada could do a bit better (coughcoughArmada2.0cough) but the mechanics and strategy of Armada is more my style. If you are completely new to Armada, I would suggest trying to find a way to play this first. Maybe a friend has it or maybe your local game store has a store copy. This core box is a big buy, especially given that only 1 of the 3 included ships are very tournament competitive. If you do find yourself loving the game, it is worth it for a lot of the vital components this will come with to get you playing regularly.

I'm with everyone else that the gameplay is awesome. Read other reviews if you want more on that. Regarding the price and value; at first I was in agreement that the starting price for the game was too high and I considered taking a star or two off. However, I thought about it more and changed my mind. If it were just plastic and cardboard that you were buying, then yes I'd say it's too high, but look in the instructions near the end and you'll find the credits. It's not just a physical product you're purchasing; it's the countless hours put in by the play testers, graphic designers, modelers, copywriters, and more. All the work that has gone in to the game to keep it balanced and fun is completely worth it in my opinion.

I love X-wing. It was my first attempt at the miniature games. But Armada, it's a totally different beast. The pacing, while slower, it's also more dramatic. When you got your enemy on your broadside, and you throw your bucket load of dice into them... it's so satisfying. Everything is so tactical. You don't rely in luck, to defend yourself. You need to make tough decisions whether to redirect the damage brace it, or evade, if you are far enough. This is not a game for fighter pilots, this is an Admirals game.
