“I worked as an Electronic Technician for the government for more than 25 years and have built, designed, and repaired hundreds of radio equipment. The alignment procedure for the AM was easy however, for the FM alignment, there is much to be desired that is lacking in the manual. I do not recommend this kit at all.”
“1. Is the RF generator and audio generator the same thing? 2. For the generator and oscilloscope to run the dynamic measurement, which type is good for that? Like, what range should I choose? Thanks.”
“I've build many Heathkits and Ramsey's kits over the years and never had any problems. This is pretty poor kit in my opinion. The traces lifted off the board under low soldering heat. The speaker collapsed while trying to mount it. the resistor leads were very thin. I attempted to contact Elenco technical support, but they did not respond to my emails or phone calls.”
“Still building the radio, but have noticed some issues. The solder supplied does not work well, so had to revert to lead based solder. Having someone learn using the supplied solder will be challenging for them. The separate amplifier card seems OK, but it can cause a short circuit to the top of capacitor C43. The header pins, page 16, Fig 1, are very hard to keep vertical with the board while soldering, and the leads seem too thick for the IC socket, which could cause the IC not to have a good connection, when placed back in the socket.”
“A nice kit to put together. It will teach you the fundamentals of electronics.A very nice instruction manual. Well written. Use a good 60/40 solder. Throwaway the junk they give you. You need a lot of heat to melt it. A nice kit for a father and son ( or daughter ) to spend the afternoon.”
