Elenco Auto-Scan FM Radio Kit Reviews

4.1 Rating 482 Reviews
I bought this to just pass the time, and as a kid I used to put together Heathkit things so I thought the time has come to get back to my youth. This FM kit is really a work of art. The board is beautifully detail and it was well packaged, presented and laid out. The instructions are excellent and there is lots of additional information on radios in general and this radio in particular. I have little understanding of these things but I read all about it anyway and was fascinated. And thank goodness it actually worked at the end of all my somewhat amateurish soldering. They make many good points about having the right soldering iron and learning to solder well. I recommend paying attention to that part. And it was fun when I finished to turn it on and instantly hear a radio station. The sound is mediocre but it's not meant to be that kind of listening excellence. I recommend being patient and steady and all should turn out well.

This kit was very user friendly. My daughter and I assembled it in a few hours. The directions were straight forward. There are parts of the instructions that go over operation theory. Honestly above a 9 yr old’s head. She picked right up on the soldering and put most of the kit together herself with me just handing her the components. We switched about half way through. It was an unbelievable bonding experience.

This is not a plug and play radio. You will have to get all sorts of tools and do-hickeys setup and out on a work table to put this radio together. I'm not done yet, but I'm learning a ton while I put it together :)

Good for learning soldering, disappointing finished product...the radio struggles to stay in tune. I would have paid more for a digital tuner.

My nine year old grandson loved this STEM kit. He has brought it to his school and demonstrated how the various parts work.

The scanner lasted two weeks for my five year old son. Lots of noise on the channels.
