Freewing A-4E/F Skyhawk High Performance 80mm EDF Jet - PNP Reviews

4.8 Rating 172 Reviews
What a great Jet! Went together really easily. I put a gyro on board since this was my first jet. I've only got 6 flights on it, but it has been exactly as advertised. Stable, FAST and ridiculous roll rates! Lots of power even up here at the Mile High City. It is IMPERATIVE to keep lots of speed in the landing approach. I just need spring to show up so I can go out and practice.

Lets, see well this was my first ducted fan jet, and let me tell you, just wow! you know i went into it thinking i might be ******* from only having flown trainers and sport planes, and that was not the case, i just put in very low rates and took it really easy and added a fair amount of expo, i was blown away by just how smooth and easy to fly jets actually are provided you have experience already. Landing was a breaze, just came in with a tiny amount of power and at the last 10 feet chopped it and just held it off and it pretty much landed itself. Awesome jet, even more amazing is the history behind it. I recommend checking out the history of the A4 on youtube, amazing airplane from the 50s and 60s

Great looking jet and flys very nicely once you get the tuning correct as in expo and throws. WARNING! do not fly this plane on a windy day with out a gyro, you will experience alot of wing rock and turbulence. I almost crashed on landing 2 times because of this. Second Warning, Make sure to set your ailerons and elevator throws on low throws with expo because she is very sensitive. Landings are easy but they have to be made really good or else she will tip over. I use a 5000 mah 6s in mines pushed all the way forward as possible as stated on the forums.

The good. It's a beautiful model. It's a quality kit which goes together in 30 minutes and flies great right out of the box. The bad. If you want the plane to look scale it will take all day to put the decals on. I like a quick “hot” flying plane but the given throws are way too extreme. I would dial them wY back for your first flight. I have flown many of the motion Freewing Jets. The Stinger is the most user friendly with light wing loading and great flight characteristics. The T45 is one of the most challenging to keep in the sky with super high wing loading. I would put this Jet in the middle closer to the Stinger than the T45 if that helps anyone decide if this Jet is for them.

The two years of developmental flight test of the Freewing A-4 Skyhawk is apparent from take-off as the Skyhawk tracks a solid stable trace across the sky with its visual presence in the air hard to match. I recommend taking a little time setting up and establishing a landing approach configuration. Work on a slightly nose high attitude with full flaps lowered and gear down controlling the rate of decent with throttle, keep on the throttle till the wheels are on the deck however as the Skyhawk will dip a wing if you get to slow.

Great kit went together with no problems. I have about 12 flights so far and it's very stable.

I maidened my A4 yesterday and it was a bit more exciting than I intended. I set the aileron controls slightly more conservative than the manual, after hearing about roll sensitivity on the RC Groups thread. I used hole #3 on the servos rather than the outermost hole (#4), with low rate at 60%, and 30% expo. Take-off was nearly fatal! The bird rolled past knife-edge shortly after rotation, and back past knife-edge when I corrected. I LIGHTLY touched the stick and levelled the wings, with the gear coming up, and began to gain some height. Flaps up and the bird came up on step and I got her into the circuit. I tried a roll and watched a roll rate faster than my 3D Edge 540T. This is ridiculous! If I'd been on high rates I would have buried the bird on climb out.Come on, Motion - nobody needs those rates. How about issuing an addendum with more suitable throws? I know it's a hot rod but I wonder how many could seriously handle taking off on high rates using servo hole #4? Why set-up customers for such an experience? The bird flies well but doesn't benefit from ailerons so sensitive that you have to breathe on the stick to get reasonable control.
