Hi Harold, Thanks for your feedback and your military service. Debossed tags are indeed much harder to read than modern embossed dogtags. Historically, they were never actually intended to be read directly, rather they were used primary for battlefield transcription equipment to copy the information from the tag to a carbon copy piece of paper. That said they can be made easier to read by rubbing in black shoe polish to darken the letters, see here for a video: https://www.mydogtag.com/blog/debossed-darkened-letter-dog-tags Also, we would be happy to send you replacement tags that are embossed instead of debossed, please email us for further details.
