I needed some help to understand gentlemen classic clothing. The origins, denominations, combinations, protocols, etc. Now I know a little bit better how to dress and why thanks to this throw back to the golden old days. I wish every western man read this book so they could learn that to dress well is about manliness, savoir faire et vivre, and respecting others. Thanks for this lesson of classicism and good taste.

An excellent publication, full of inspiring illustrations showing a variety of styles and situations. I think that this was truly one of the golden eras of men's style and this book demonstrates that perfectly. I love these types of illustrations and to have them in one publication is truly wonderful, previously my only access to them was in the book Dressing the Man by Alan Flusser or old articles from Esquire on the website Permanent Style. This is so much better and I would unhesitatingly recommend this book.

I LOVE this book. I can look at the illustrations over and over. The text is informative, entertaining, inspiring, and well written and provides an invaluable history of men's attire during this era. I wish there was a second in a series ... and a third, fourth etc. I would buy them all without hesitation. As for the three questions asked for, although not completely relevant to this purchase ... 1) Problems? - lack of access to description, illustration, and detailed commentary on men's clothes of this era. The only resource I had access to were old movies! 2) Changed? - I have a much better understanding and appreciation for these styles, customs and materials that i love so much. I have had trousers made based on the illustrations. They are fabulous. 3) Feeling now? - Happy and inspired :D and anxious for more books from this source.

I've loved these illustrations for some time & to find so many of them gathered in the one place with interesting and informative text (the author is also not afraid to be critical when he thinks an ensemble is not put together to best advantage) is fantastic. The quality of the e-book is high in terms of the resolution of the images & though I would always prefer a 'real' book this has been a joy to browse through & a source of inspiration. There must be enough illustrations around for a sequel...by the way the original text for these illustrations is often very entertaining to read in itself so might have been interesting to include some of that...

I was very impressed with “Gentlemen of the Golden Age” in terms of its compelling, detailed, polished and fascinating narrative, as well as its excellent color illustrations, and extensive coverage of the most sophisticated period of post-Victorian men’s fashion. Before I read the book, I lacked a proper historical and “color awareness” context as to the appropriate fit, coordination, and application of vintage (ie. “Golden Age”) clothing. Although I intuitively love fine leather goods, tweeds, cavalry twills and worsted wool products, my formal knowledge as to their application was through fictional media, such as “Downtown Abbey”, “Indiana Jones”, “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, and related novels. I felt a more “scholarly” approach was needed for me to carefully compile my “new” wardrobe. Once I read the ebook, I developed a far more refined fashion and material awareness, to the point that my colleagues (I am a legally trained public safety officer and reserve military officer) and their wives actively seek my advice on office and social dress matters. This has enhanced my confidence and enhanced my quality of life, as well as expanded my contacts in the professional realm. Now that I have read Gentlemen of The Golden Age, I feel more confident, and comfortable within formal and semi-formal gatherings, although I also feel better about the impression I portray in everyday life. I have embraced the finest elements of our sartorial past, while remaining practical and firmly grounded in the current era. Tish

This is probably the most comprehensive collection of images from the 1930’s i’ve manage to come by online. It encompasses great descriptions for each of the illustrations that really enable you to understand the style of the time. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about classic menswear and looking to enhance their style.
