“I believe that champagne is the biggest (and most successful) marketing fraud perpetrated - making austere wine from underripe grapes and convincing people that it is great because it carries the Champagne label. Great ones do exist but require a second mortgage. The best bubblies are French from regions other than Champagne. Cremant de Limoux, Cremant de Bourgogne and of course Crement de Loire. And my favourite is de Loire rose. A splash of Cabernet France, usually a lot of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. And the clue is the 12.5% alcohol - the grapes actually got ripe.”

“A lovely summer sparkling rose. All my friends were very complimentary when I took a bottle of this along to holiday celebrations. Sure it has all the right nose etc but it was very pleasant drinking.”

“We had this on Christmas Eve, 5pm drinkies, with cheese and crackers. It was a warm evening and the bubbles were light and refreshing. Crisp and interesting.”
