“It's always a risk to commit to a video when it's not clear what to expect. As an amateur I would have been expecting it to include techniques I would have been very disappointed. As it turned out I was happy with a narrative about the issues, dimensions and options which have made me think more deeply about the art of portraits. From which I learnt some lessons. Thank you.”

“I've already recommended BBC Maestro to friends and family, as a learning opportunity, but also the Jonathan Yeo videos have been a wonderful chance for me to see how artists work. I paint portraits in oils, a recent finalist in the SAA competition, and regularly follow Raw Umber Studios, drawing in pastel, charcoal, and want to expand my knowledge and maybe even sell some paintings in time. Jonathan is very interesting, as he hasn't been to art school, and neither have I. I wanted to know more, and I could watch it through several times. May even paint him from the videos.Thank you for the opportunity. A recent pastel drawing is added below ( not of me, by the way).”

“This has been a lovely way of learning from a professionals experience. Jonathan Yeo was engaging, knowledgable and also very honest. Which is fabulous for someone who only started to even paint pictures 4 months ago. Let alone tackle portraiture.
Thank you for giving me the confidence to travel this road lesser known and to understand that I am not the only artist to question their ability.”

“Jonathan Yeo is prepared to reveal a lot about his approach to his art, demonstrating that there is a great deal more to portraiture than pure technical skill (which he clearly has in abundance). He makes it clear that there are social and psychological aspects that the painter needs to channel to achiev success. This is a rewarding course to follow, partly because it illuminates what motivates Yeo as an artist.”

“I'm currently working on two portraits and find Jonathan's classes invaluable. I have learned so much and improved my portraits. Giancarlo is a great subject to paint, very interesting features. Jonathan's class is chock full of advice and insights. I totally recommend it.”

“Jonathon Yoe’s, Portrait Painting had a good approach and balance, discussing what makes and how to create a good portrait painting. Intro of two chapters went straight into the subject, with a little history lesson. Jonathon’s journey/ self-information was tucked in mid-way of the course at chapters 10 and 11 and it was well timed and just the right length. The "Reveal" chapter 25 was excellent, artist and subject discussed the minute detail of what makes an outstanding portrait and how a small change or single brush stroke can alter the whole feel. Also, learning about how the sitter and third party interpret what they see in a portrait painting was very good. I learnt a lot, but I felt the course needed some practical tutoring chapters showing actual techniques on the canvas, colour palettes, etc. this would have elevated this course above very good to brilliant”
