It’s a shame that this is the only art course.. heaps of writing courses but nothing on drawing or other art forms

This is an interesting course if all you want is a series of discussons with Yeo talking very generally about his work. There is very little information or detail on how to paint, it's all very vague and repetitive. Yeo keeps saying that he hasn't really thought about how he paints, which is irritating after paying £50 to learn something about the technicalities of his painting.

This isn't a step-by-step guide to painting a portrait in the style of Jonathan Yeo. It's much better that that. Imagine you could just have a series of long chats with him over several days about various aspects of how he approaches a portrait, then this is close to that. You get a kind of stream of thoughts around how he considers composition, or lighting, or getting to know the sitter, or painting from life vs from a photo. It's gold dust really for anyone who is painting or thinking about painting people to hear what an accomplished artist thinks about the things you're likely to have questions about once you get going. I loved it.

It felt like a lot of talk in the beginning, hence slow moving. Hang in there! Practical examples will come. Lot of pearls and practical advice/guidance to help you think deeply about the next level in your practice and how you can approach it.

The course is only Jonathan talking about the various topics. There is very limited demonstration of techniques and much of the advice is pretty vague. The main take away from Jonathan is "try things out and you will learn" I think I knew that already!

This was not a class, this was a video essay made by people who are not interested in learning to paint. I think the most frustrating thing was seeing the painting come out with all the line work already on it and we never saw how that was done. Did he do that from photographs? Which one? Why? They edited out all the parts that would have made this interesting. I found his vagueness annoying, just tell us the brushes you are using, don't say try whatever you like. We want to know what you use. Also the order of the videos is frustrating, materials are course 20? Materials should be at the begining.

A fantastic artist. Unfortunately I didn’t really learn much, it was more of a documentary than a lesson.
