It's about him, and him only. I learned nothing.

I would like to have seen a lot more of his process rather than here him talk about it. A lot of repetition and often doesn't say much at all with lots of words. Visual art is ltireally a visual medium and this talking head style, in the era of high quality youtubes and online classes this doesn't quite measure up. I am a fan of his painting and think he would have more to teach than this format gave.

Hi there, Thanks for your review. We value every BBC Maestro customer, and really value your feedback. All courses have detailed course notes to accompany them, which a lot of learners find really useful when watching a course, especially when completing the course exercises. Hopefully that's give you a little more in terms of the practical application of Yeo's techniques :) I hope this helps, but feel free to contact our amazing customer service team at support@bbcmaestro.com if you would like more support! Most people will watch this course with a view to start portrait painting. I learnt how one man goes about his job, but nothing really about various drawing techniques, exact colour mixing, timings; just a lot of hand waving by a nice enough man who used 'sort of' a little too much.

What was your primary motivation for purchasing this course? Learn a new skill, Pursue a hobby
I have only done a few episodes so far but I am very dissapointed. So far it is just watching Mr. Yeo talk. It is all very abstract advise and unhelpful to someone who is farily new to portrait painting. I understood this course to be teaching one how to paint not just listening to a famous artist go on and on about his experiences and thoughts.

This is the ONLY painting course I've ever signed up to that is essentially hours of an artist talking about portrait painting without any techniques being demonstrated by the tutor!! There are occasional short snippets of the artist painting an actor which is already in progress and not actually being taught. There are also lots of photos of finished portraits. Jonathan Yeo is a talented artist but honestly it should have been made clear by the BBC that this class is just Jonathan talking about portrait painting and is not actually the artist demonstrating portrait painting techniques. I would not have signed up to this if I'd known. Disappointing.

What was your primary motivation for purchasing this course? Achieve career goals
It was such a joy to discover the course with Jonathan Yeo, as I am a fan of his work, but I'm very disappointed. I was hoping to get real instructions and demonstrations of how Jonathan works, how he chooses certain colours and how he tackles problems that might arise during the process of painting. But this course is really a very long monologue and some footage of a portrait being painted, but it is not a teaching course with instructions etc. And as examples we get many finished portraits, which are beautiful, but he doesn't discuss why and how he made them a certain way. I am already painting portraits and I am sorry to say that I learnt very little new insights in the eight hours of this course. I sometimes found it difficult to sit out long discussions, but as the course is not cheap, I felt I had to finish the whole thing.

Far too much talking; not enough demonstration of techniques and methodology or information about, e.g. canvas types, preferred paints etc. This was not what I expected and I’m very glad that at least I didn’t pay the full price.

I was expecting instruction on how to paint, but mainly got chat and naval gazing. Slightly disappointing given the high cost, but still an interesting and enjoyable experience... just don't expect any tips or tricks on how to be a better painter. Also, the camera annoyingly panned back and forth too often.
