“I'm a big fan of Harlan Coben and have read all his books. Maybe that helps, but it feels like this is the first writing course where BBC Maestro have got both the talent and an engaging speaker. His enthusiasm for the job comes across and is infectious. He's reminded me of what it is to be a writer. He's reminded me how to use my creativity, which, shamefully, I haven't been doing properly for years and I don't know why. I'm whizzing through the course and learning from a legend. I will watch it over and over again, whenever I need an infusion of encouragement. I feel like it's just me and him, in a room, and he's guiding me personally. This isn't a series of lectures. It's a fantastic insight and a conversation with a man who's trying to bring out the best in me. Fantastic course!”

“Harlan has a genius way of teaching and encouraging students. His lessons are clear and concise, devoid of pomp or frivolous fillers. He gives you the facts, never veers off topic, encourages you to start and continue writing, provides valuable insight on finding an editor and agent, and has a pleasant voice to listen to. I intend to watch his course again.”

“I signed up for BBC Maestro because I really like Harlan Coben's books. His Tutorial „Writing Thrillers with Harlan Coben“ helped me to rely on my intuition as a writer. I'm the daughter of an engineer and I tend to pay a lot of attention to the construction of a story, some times to much. This can make it seem too contrived. Questions like "What if?" help me to trigger my imagination.”

“I enjoyed his warmth and passion and I particularly loved that he encourages us to break the rules as we write from our hearts. I liked that he gave examples from his own books to highlight particular approaches / techniques that he recommends. I love his holistic approach to story telling and how he is not afraid to talk about his own experiences that became ideas / lines / themes, "fiction is memoir" ... it's a welcome change to hear someone acknowledge that.”
“I couldn't finish it. The bulk of what I saw was describing the plots of his books, quoting other people, stating the obvious and telling stories about his life. Watching this made me think of a student trying to pad their 500 word answer out to 1,500. I could easily see him having forgotten about the course until the last minute and hastily making things up en route to the studio.”
