In 1795 Thomas Jaques took on his 15-year-old son, John as an apprentice. Together they established ‘Thomas Jaques: Manufacturer of Ivory, Hardwoods, Bone and Tunbridge Ware’ in Hatton Garden. We have remained a family run business ever since, with the same unwavering passion for quality games and toys.

Today we are ever-expanding our toy range and have been honoured with over 10 awards in the past five years as a result. Our Mini Minds Hub launched in 2020 to encourage learning at home. This is now stocked with over 150 free resources. We’ve been working for over 230 years to fill the world with more joy and we hope to keep striving for that goal long into the future. “the perfect size chess board and not just for travel, one slight issue is the pieces aren’t held very tightly so a jog and you’re going to need to start again”

“Bought this set and was eager to receive it. However the disappointment became apparent when I realised I couldn’t even get past setting up the pieces on the board. The pegs are far too short and end up slipping out as soon as you try to lay it down. And upon success, moving the board on the desk even just the slightest caused the pieces to fall out instantly all over the floor. Frustrating. The packaging is beautiful and fast shipping but ultimately the product doesn’t serve its purpose of being able to enjoy a game of chess. Can’t imagine bringing this as a travel set because it’s guaranteed the pieces will be lost. Emailed on the 3rd for a refund and return and still haven’t heard back after 4 days. Won’t be purchasing or visiting the site again, money is better spent elsewhere.”
