“So I got this breed because it was supposed to be so friendly. Our waffles is a big beautiful girl but is not exactly friendly. If you manage to catch her she is fine but she isn't happy about it. She will run towards you if you have snacks but you can't get within 5 feet of her. She is the only one that will actually peck me if I put my hand out in front on her. She started to lay around the 25 week mark. She lays medium - large almost pink eggs 3 to 4 times a week. She went broody her first summer and became mean. I couldn't break her and she quit laying completely and I couldn't keep her out of the nesting box that the other 5 girls liked to use so there was drama. After months of trying everything I finally just let her hatch a few eggs and she was the best, PROTECTIVE, mother. So if you are looking for a hen to hatch eggs I would recommend. If you are looking for a hen that lays eggs I would not recommend.”
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and honest experience. Buff Orpingtons are often known for their gentle nature, but as you discovered, individual personalities can vary quite a bit, especially once broodiness comes into play. When a hen goes broody, it is very common for her behavior and laying pattern to change dramatically, and that protective instinct can be intense. It sounds like she truly shined in her role as a mother, which is one of the qualities this breed has been valued for over generations. While broodiness can certainly create challenges in a laying flock, it can be a real asset for those looking to hatch and raise chicks naturally. We appreciate you sharing both the positives and the challenges, as feedback like this helps other customers decide which breeds are the best fit for their goals.
“If you’re a new chicken owner, like I am, you’ll want a Buff Orpington in your flock. Not all three of them are super lovey dovey, but one is and she wants a cuddle every day. They are calm, quiet chickens. In the order of 15 birds, we had 4 Buff’s, one died after a couple of days. I know it happens, so I wasn’t pressed. I see a lot of angry comments about chicks dying, but it happens. It’s not avoidable, even if you hatch them in an incubator yourself.”
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review, Autumn! We’re glad to hear your Buff Orpingtons have been a great fit for you as a new chicken owner — they really are known for their calm, quiet nature, and it’s always special when one chooses to be an everyday cuddler.
We’re very sorry for the loss of one chick, and we truly appreciate your understanding and perspective. Chick loss, while unfortunate, can happen even with the best care, and we’re grateful you shared that insight for other customers. We will reach out to you about your loss.
Thank you again for choosing us and for giving your flock such a loving home.
Thank you for the wonderful review, Lisa! We’re so glad to hear your Buff Orpington chicks arrived in excellent health — especially with a December shipment to Boston. That’s great to hear, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Wishing you lots of joy as they grow!
“Chick arrived happy and healthy! This batch was some of the most lively and active chicks that I've recieved from MPC. They are growing fast and thriving!”
