“Our Olive egger Graycie is one tough hen! She chases down our 125# German shepherd with no fear! Our pup is great with the hens and has never tried to harm them whatsoever but it's quite comical seeing a hen challenge a dog that size and seemingly refuse to back down! Graycie is both cold and heat tolerant and a consistent layer of beautiful mint green colored eggs. I had hoped for a more olive tone but they're still absolutely beautiful and a great addition to add color to my egg basket! She is not my most affectionate hen, but friendly enough to be picked up and near me and does not show any aggression to anyone else in my mixed flock. She is an excellent forager and can be a little Houdini at times escaping our run on occasion on her quest to find better bugs elsewhere! Overall a great breed though that I would highly recommend!”
Graycie sounds like a barrel of laughs to watch in the backyard! The Olive Eggers are beautiful and will have different hues to their feathers which makes them rather fun to watch mature in our flocks! We hope for many more years of her fiesty attitude and wonderful eggs!
“These sweet chicks have such a calm demeanor! Their coloring is so pretty. One is completely different than the other. I can hardly wait to see what the look like when they are grown!!”
Thank you for taking the time to review our Olive Egger babies! It is incredibly fun to see all their individual personalities grow. We are thankful they are bringing you happiness!
“We received an Olive Egger last May and she is now a beautiful hen (solid black with a green and purple shimmer in the sunlight). She is friendly (though quirky) and started laying at 26 weeks. Within a few weeks she was providing us with a large and gorgeous olive green egg (often covered with dark green/brownish speckles!!!) 5 days/week. Unfortunately, this spring she has been broody FIVE times (twice in March, twice in April and for three consecutive weeks in May). Subsequently, other than a few sporadic eggs, we haven't received anything from her since February. I am weary of constantly placing her in "broody jail". Also, we spend too much money on high quality feed to not get rewarded with eggs.”
While we are happy to hear about your beautiful Olive Egger hen - she sounds absolutely gorgeous! - we are surprised at her broodiness level! This breed is known to go broody sometimes but it is not common for them to be so that often! It could be that your girl has gotten into a sort of "habit" and her hormones are a bit unbalanced - this can be triggered by a few things such as finding a cache of eggs in a nice dark nest and sometimes if they even hear baby chicks! As we understand having a constantly broody hen is not good for you nor her health - but "broody jail" has become a bit much - you can try a couple of other things to see if they help break this cycle she is currently in. Check your nesting boxes a few times a day - even if the eggs are not her's - remove any that have been laid immediately to remove that enticement; place a light in the coop during the day for a week or so since it will not be that cozy and dark place for her to settle in, and you can even try placing a fan in the run area to blow on the coop itself making it a bit cooler. Sometimes one or a few combined tricks like this may change her mind - & her maternal instincts - around and she'll begin laying those beautiful eggs for you soon! Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. You may email us at flockcare@mypetchicken.com, chat with a live Flock Care Specialist or give us a call! We are happy to do our best to help!
“All eight (8) of my gals arrived happy and healthy!
First, I’ll give a little information on when they shipped/how long it took/etc… for those nervous folks like me! They hatched in Ohio on a Monday and by 4:30 PM, I received notification they were in route. They then arrived in Cleveland around 7:30 PM. I anxiously waited and never got another notification until I got a call Wednesday morning from my local post office. They evidently shipped from Cleveland late Monday night, but it took about 30 hours to make it to my local post office (Galveston, TX which is an hour south of Houston). I was able to pick them up at 8:30 AM from the post office. The total time in transit was about 40 hours give or take.
They are now one week old today, and all growing so fast. Wing feathers are developing nicely on all of them. They all eat like little oikers, and love to chase flies (a big problem on the Texas coast). I ordered one of each of a Silked White Easter Egger, Blue Splash Ameraucana, Lavender Dream Easter Egger, Blue/Black/Splash Orpington, Cuckoo Bluebar Blue-Egger, Golden Cuckoo Maran, Golden Laced Wyandotte, and an Olive Egger. The Silked and the Golden Maran both have feathers on their legs, so that is exciting for me! I am struggling telling the difference in a few of them. I know the Silked, the Golden Maran (she is brown and looks just like the photo), the Wyandotte (also looks just like the posted photo), and the Lavender Easter Egger. The Bluebar and the Olive Egger look almost identical, and the Blue Splash Ameraucana and Orpington are too similar for me to tell tight now. I’m super excited to watch as they grown to figure this mystery out!
Personalities are developing, but the Golden Cuckoo Maran is EASILY the more inquisitive and friendly. She runs up to the edge of the pen every time I unzip the top (which by the way they HATE when I unzip and zip up that top of the pop-up brooder). She also will jump in my hand and try to walk up my arm. She is going to be fun! The Golden Laced Wyandotte and the Lavender Dream Easter Egger can’t stand her getting all the attention, so they then come up to visit me. One of either the Bluebar or the Olive Egger is also pretty friendly. The other one will not get anywhere near me! After reading reviews, it might be the Bluebar. The Silked White Easter Egger, and the Blue/Black/Splash Orpington eventually come over as they see the others having fun with “papa”.”
Thank you for this wonderful review which is so helpful to your fellow flock keepers in what to expect when ordering their babies from My Pet Chicken! We are so happy to hear they are doing well and bringing you happiness! Please let us know how we may help you with your flock needs in the future!
