How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? As i have a few farming families within my classroom it was awesome to see their oral language grow as they were the expert. We linked the lego farm to writing.

“My children loved this resource. They are still playing with the lego bricks even after we have followed all the lesson ideas. It is awesome to see them still using some of the language that we practiced during the lesson still being used now. Lego is always an amazing resource to support learning as the kids LOVE lego.”

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them Regularly heard in the classroom - “can we have the farm lego?” During our whanau conferences some of the students showed their parents pictures of their creations and read them the stories they had written.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The farm lego and the little packets of lego. The children were able to create, problem solve and share.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The base plates and vehicle wheels - with the base plates children constructed their own farms and this led to a lot of discussion and turn taking. The wheels had a positive effect on creativity as well.

“This kit worked in well with our Y1/2 play based learning. Children were able to follow instructions to make the parts but in the end they constructed their own buildings and vehicles. The role play was good with all the farm animals and the people. The parts also worked well with existing construction bricks.”

(this child did not like vegetables but when I brought some to school he gave them a go and surprised himself). Child 2, I can use Te Reo on my farm and teach my Dad. Child

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? At first I would say the lego, but then when we played the games and the children were using the language in a safe environment they then felt safe and confident to share in the playground or in the senior room.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? That lego is not a toy, but it relates to real life and teaches the joy of learning

“The Brick Farm kit has been a wonderful resource. Where does one start to write a review when it contains valuable teaching in all areas of learning. While we started it late in Term 2 and the kids have thoroughly enjoyed it and we will continue the journey in Term 3, this is going to be ongoing in our class. My class is across three-year levels and it was great seeing Tuakana Teina in the class. The older children helped the younger children build different parts of the farm. The children are more familiar with the Maori names of the fruit and vegetables and it is great hearing this extended to lunchtime when naming the items in their lunch box. The children enjoyed the spell it, draw it, say it, match it and use it activities. We will continue to use this in term 3 as the children are enjoying it and I would like to get into more of the literacy side of things, especially with all the books and as we are going to visit a sheep and beef farm in term 3 which will link nicely for what they have learnt. The journey of the brick farm is far from over and I can see it lasting till the end of the year. Thank you for an amazing resource.”
