“Children really enjoyed opening the kit blocks and attempting to follow instructions to create set designs. Some worked with their parents or with older students to do this. Others found it too difficult to complete independently and used the blocks to make their own creations.”

“My Year1 class really enjoyed following the steps to create each piece. They then used these to role play their inquiry learning around healthy foods and how our food can go from ‘farm to plate’. The making cards were a hit (with reading support from an adult) and lead to the bricks being constructed into a range of items.”

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Making the vehicles - the children enjoyed playing with these once completed. They also enjoyed opening up the packets as they did not know what part of the farm they were going to get.

“My class used this resource as part of a Tumble rotation with mixed-ability groups. They all enjoyed the opportunity to make up the different parts in their groups and although grouping was mixed ability, following some of the instructions appeared slightly tricky. It was great to see everyone participating within their groups and delegating different responsibilities during the making process, e.g. read instructions, finding parts, making, putting on stickers etc. Once completed the farm and game became a part of a reading rotation activity. The Bricks Farm 23 also supported oral language, problem-solving and turn-taking.”

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "I loved building the farm with my buddy". "We made a tractor and a milk tanker."

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Building the larger farm house, shed and vehicles in a small group with an older buddy was a great learning experience as it meant older and younger children had to cooperate together and follow instructions.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The farm is still set up in the classroom and I'm sure it will get lots of use in the remaining terms of this year. I am also looking forward to seeing how the disuccssions it generated might transfer into next term's Science leaning around the Living Wor

“My class of New Entrant learners were very excited when the kit arrived! As a Maths activity they enjoyed doing a 'lucky dip' of the small bags of bricks and predicting how many pieces were inside. Knowing that building the farm vehicles and buildings would be tricky for my 5 year olds to complete on their own, we invited our 'buddy class' of Year 4/5 learners to spend an afternoon in our classroom helping construct the kits. This was a great success, with the older children doing a great job of helping the younger ones. The farm was then set up on a table in the classroom and the children have spent many happy hours playing with it. It has been lovely to hear their discussions within their play related to farming and horticulture, which is the perfect lead in to our Science unit next term which focuses on the Living World, and it links well with the Garden to Table project we have recently begun working on within our school.”

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I was surprised when Whaea opened the box for the first time. I liked working with my buddy building the truck, we worked together to find and build each piece.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? I think the kit as a whole was fantastic because it gave the students an opportunity to work independently and together/pair and small group.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The understanding of different farms. And the ongoing use of the bricks throughout the year.
