This has been an amazing resource for our Y0 class. We talked about where food comes from and used the bricks farm to build our oral language around farming.

They recognised certain vehicles, eg milk tanker. The garden and growing was great because we have one, so we could connect with what w

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? We could connect to what was happening on our farm, on a real farm, even the impact of the cyclone and show this in our writing and then use this for our reading.

Wow! What a generous resource, we had so much fun constructing this as we started our learning programme. We looked at lots of food and where it comes from, we grew some ourselves, we looked at how farms produce food and how it gets to us. (We also used the playmat to support some of our maths learning, it fitted in perfectly with a unit we were using from NZMaths!)

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? We are a small farming community, so the fact that it was a farm was relatable to my students. They were building things that are in their everyday experiences. For those that don’t live on a farm , all they see is farms driving around.

This kit was so amazing for my students. They were so pleased to be able to construct the farm from scratch together. As 5 year olds , it was certainly challenging but with some assistance from our senior students they did it. Thank you

My students have LOVED the bricks farm. It encouraged them to work together to create a build. Once the packs were built they have spent a lot of time roleplaying and recreating with the bricks. They have enjoyed exploring the games that have come with it and even making up their own versions and rules.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them "They need trucks to deliver things to the supermarket". "The farmer has a dog to get the sheep".
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The small parts. Tamariki enjoyed the challenges, receiving a pack, putting it together and placing them on the farm.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? If we take things apart, it takes a long time to put things together and things won't grow.

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? We found lots of the books in the library about farms, farm animals and growing and it was lovely to see the tamariki recognise and read some of the words they came across in the challenge packs. We also shared a big book on bread and how it is made.

We set up a small world of the Bricks Farm including the house, shed and vehicles. I included some of the small components I had collected. Ahu were so excited to see the set up. They also loved doing some of the component activities and were eager to collect brick packs. As we are a New Entrant class, tamariki responded with lots of talk and many pictures. The idea was that our small world was a 'masterpiece in progress' and that tamariki could play with the trucks and add components as they earned them but that major pieces would remain in tact. Unfortunately, a small number of students kept taking the larger pieces apart to create new pieces and I was frequently putting these back together and the tamariki were constantly trying to re-build. A lot of frustration for those who abided by the expectations! Though many of us reminded our 'deconstructors' of the expectation, the 'deconstructing'- continued. I am in the classroom 2 days a week and on the days that I was there, I would arrive to see a mass of loose bricks on the activity table and many blocks missing. It didn't help that as a New Entrant class new children were arriving every week and many on days when I was not in the classroom. I'm afraid, that in the end, I put the bricks farm away. The Resource was exceptional - thank you! It provided many opportunities to build on prior knowledge and learning. Though all tamariki were enthusiastic about completing the challenges, I and many of the tamariki were very disappointed to regularly find the farm deconstructed.

The theme of the bricks is a wonderful extension of our play and leads nicely into our structured learning. We love to be outside and grow vegetables in our space. The children found making some of the vehicles challenging but with support have succeeded.

A great kit but the instructions for the bricks themselves were hard for many littlies to follow colour discrimination within pics and if an error made the bricks aren't easy to pull apart
