“My year group inquiry for this term was E Tu Ake - Stand Strong and in particular, we were looking at protests throughout NZ History. The Aotearoa NZ Histories 23 pack was practically made for our inquiry! It had powerful resources and stories that were useful for our Y5/6 students. Some resources were more appropriate for an older age group but we still managed to find a lot of relevant information. Highly recommend.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I can use this model and I found the kit better than expected . It is a very motivational kit to help teach history.

“The physical resources were amazing - my students loved being able to hold and touch items. There were so many that we will be doing it next year as well. I found the website (teacher site) a bit clunky and hard to use. It was super helpful to have most of the research done and links available to limit student time wasted on google. My students were not able to handle the self directed/inquiry type nature of the student site and got lost in the content...not a criticism of the site, just perhaps my kids aren't quite there yet - so I used the materials provided to create booklets for them to complete as literacy tasks. They then got to chose one of the stories to investigate a little more and create a project to show what they have learnt. This worked well.”

The kit offered me the assurance I needed to explore the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum material. Up until I took the time to work my way through it, the abundance of internet resources and the support materials in the package were a little challenging.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? One of the postcards was close to me, and I could add personal insight to it, so I made it a reasonable place for my students to start.

Myself, my pupils, and whanau are very grateful for the time, work, and cooperation put forward by all parties involved in creating this amazing resource. To preserve and honour the history of NZ communities, it is essential to capture the many viewpoints of all cultures.

“The Something Happened Here kit from Aotearoa NZ Histories 2023 is a very thorough and educational resource. It is jam packed with of materials that could be utilised for years without repeating any NZ History material. The materials in the kit were handled by my kids with great enthusiasm; it was like a treasure hunt. They carefully examined the postcards in hopes of discovering hints about both well-known and unfamiliar locations. As a result, they looked at NZ maps with Te Reo and English place names and investigated "birds eye" views of various locations. When managing the large number of images, which sparked a lot of discussion, the students gave it careful thought. The students were able to construct a timeline that they could defend by looking for hints in the pictures, talking about the different kinds of pictures, and observing minute details. The postcards we used were based on both local New Zealand history and the history of other areas they had previously visited. Information was shared with the whanau at home, sparking a lot of lively conversation. The teachers were interested to see the topics and what the students were discovering and sharing in the "Did You Know..." format.”
