“This has been a great resource for my Year 10 students to use. I made slides to go with this based around importance of local histories, our local history and turangawaewae to introduce the unit. I also taught them about usefulness and reliability of sources. It would be useful to include a tab on that for teachers who are not History trained but are using the kit. It has been interesting to see what skills they have and what skills they are learning to develop through the different types of resources. The organisation and use of different digital resources has made these a lot more accessible and this will be of significant benefit for my students who choose to take history in Year 11. The instructions on how to analyse a photo were good but it would be great to see some extra resources on how to actually use Papers Past, Digital NZ and strengths / limitations of different types of resources. I didn’t teach them how to specifically complete all tasks but left it as self guided to see how they unpacked and understood and used the different resources. Some of them struggled but worked their way through challenging questions. The use of photos and artefacts definitely elevated this and made it a lot more interesting - ie not just digital. Some of the questions were a little unclear and missing links but we were able to problem solve around this. Having taught Year 7-13 for 9 years it does seem a little too difficult for students below Year 9 to tackle this independently but for teachers to unpack and build their own units around or focusing on one story it is an excellent resource. Great range of topics and stories throughout as well.”

“This is an incredibly structured resource. It is great to do student led or teacher led depending on where you are at with the inquiry process. Awesome to also do in bite sized chunks or all together. The student facing website is awesome - could potentially be split (rather than 3 columns) for those students where it became cognitive overload and required students to abstract the information only pertaining to them. Could you just have different pages within the same website?”

“This kit has been a great way to introduce students to various aspects of NZ history. We have used it as a launch into an in-depth look into the Land March, and also for students to investigate various protest movements using the cards, artefacts and website.
