How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It gave me a really great place to start and helped to direct our learning. Having the teacher resource and the website was great.
How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We would love to create a model of our local area in a similar manner. This could be a future project - making postcards and collecting some artefacts from the local area would be such a great motivator and really creates mystery and excitement for the learners to keep them engaged and motivated to learn more

“This ANZH kit has been an amazing tool to support our teaching and learning and provided excitement and a place to begin. The kit kept akonga engagement high and provided motivation to investigate where the postcard could be from. Oral language and discussions were thoughtful and on topic.”

“As an adult on this site, I felt it was excellent. So engaging and interesting. I loved seeing each part of NZ history from different perspectives and seeing how things changed over time. Top notch. Some of my year 6s loved it but others needed quite a bit of support with the reading and unpacking. I loved the extra physical momentoes. This made it more engaging for the students. We'll done on an amazing resource.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We have already explored a lot of our local area and have had PD from local historians and local iwi so this kit has not made any difference to my motivation.

“I was warned not to use the kit by the year 5-6 teacher who had tried it previously. She said the topics were too advanced for her year 5s and would not be suitable for my year 3/4 class. The resources in the box looked interesting but we are also a class who don't have many devices that work well so having to do everything online sounded really tricky.”

“As part of our New Zealand History topic this term, the students have done some dependent investigation. The Aotearoa NZ Histories kit was a great resource to involve students in group discussions, access their prior knowledge on what they know about the different postcards and make connections with our trip to the Auckland Museum. What things they have seen at the Auckland Museum that have noticed in the kit? What are some of the similarities and differences from then to now? The students have enjoyed the group work and presenting their information to the rest of the groups.”

I guess it still feels like there is SO much that can be covered for Aotearoa NZ's histories. I'm still not sure if I've ever done enough or focused on the right parts or wrangled an appropriate assessment.
How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I was thankful to the schoolkit team for pointing me towards cards that had our areas local history in them, however I have not had the time in class to explore them yet (I am excited to as this will tie in with the local histories work we did for the challenging racism kit last term).

I absolutely love this and think that once I get to more cards will really appreciate what a treasure this really is. We all need to hear more voices, stories, opinions and break our echo chamber.

“The work, site and beautiful 'artefacts' in this kit are just phenomenal - so much work has been put into this resource. I wanted to absolutely love it just based on this. But I found it quite overwhelming, especially at first (I do know that the kit comes with a warning not to be. But I was when working through Justice - I felt I had to keep stopping and going ahead and through it all myself first, it was only later that I wrapped my head around teacher support for this). I've only managed to do two stories - Justice and Solidarity this term (and not in their entirety). By the time I got onto Solidarity, I felt much better and just adjusted the resource. My class is Year 9 and it felt like a lot of time was spent on the videos and questions in Tasks 1 and 2 to get to our task 3 each time - this is why we only did 2 cards all term. We ended up going through it all together. My students aren't super at independent work, but perhaps I should have tried harder to do it this way. I do think that once I have explored more cards I will fully appreciate the richness of this kit.”
