“We used the 'Something happened here' kit with our year 8 students during AIMS week, as we needed a different programme with 1/4 of our classes away at AIMS. The students found the tasks challenging. It took them a while to understand what it was all about, and maybe we didn't set it up well enough for them. We had hand-picked about 8 cards for them to choose from and tried to have as many from near our location as possible. They liked looking at the different resources but did not grasp the whole 'story' idea very well. I think we needed to do a lot more pre-teaching, which unfortunately we did not have time for. We wanted students to create a poster of their place, as their summary. The teachers found the circle card really confusing. it was easier to look at each location on the website to identify the artifact. We did think the artifact/item would play a bigger part than it did. It was good for students to use the different websites and explore a range of resources.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I want find out "hidden" stories from my region now ands teach my class so they have better knowledge of their local history.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Very helpful! It can be difficult to create hands on experiences in social studies and history, and this "concretifies" that learning

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes! Our kids are currently developing a series of QR codes to put around our town for tourists who visit to learn about what goes on/has happened here

“The collection of items prompted my students to make connections between items and events. They then found some objects at home and around school to represent events that had happened in their lives. We are still working through the resources and this will become a valuable kit to continue teaching Aotearoa NZ history in the future”

I think this really heightened the learning experience for our students.
