In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Many of the issues this class faces are similar to those we have explored other years (but in a more 'schoolkit' interactive and fun way this time around). An ongoing challenge for these students and their whanau is new games and things that come out. It

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I can understand the necessity of this content but am also aware of my role as a teacher and the importance of parent partnerships. Having John Parsons visit school over this time was great as he covered lots of it for me in his talk :-)

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Quite a few students are allowed to watch restricted TV or Movies and play games that are also restricted. Through supporting students to understand these ratings and why they are in place was another sideline learning opportunity.

“Students were fascinated about the similarities with offline and online boundaries! In some ways we were revisiting some of our start of the year learning and the timing was good as we also had a visit and talk with John Parsons to help reinforce safe online behaviours. I am looking to use the contents of this kit again at the start of 2021. Thanks Schoolkit!”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Sadly we have spoken a lot this year about what is appropriate behaviour online and I had already heard a lot of things that were going on. It was great too compare online wth offline behaviour and draw the parallels.

How comfortable were you in approaching the more mature topics in this kit?

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Some were really receptive which was great. Some still didn't feel that they needed to change their attitudes online.

“The kit had some great ideas and brought up some great discussions. I found the kit planning wasn't super clear and took a lot of time to work out what I was supposed to do. It would be great to have lesson plans broken down into individual lessons that are clear.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? They hadn't really changed so much - I had a pretty good idea of what issues they were already dealing with both online and offline. It may have surprised some of my students to see that a large majority of the class were exposed to inappropriate content

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit We didn't get into too many conversations about pornography as it was made aware that this wasn't really relevant to my class. We had also just completed our pubertal health unit last term which made it easier to discuss more mature content with my class.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? That they could relate to ALMOST every scenario on the cards.

“I used this school kit over the course 6 weeks with my year 7 class. For the most part, my class were really engaged with this kit. I must admit the further we went through it the less engaged we were. The scenarios were really good and relevant to my class, however some of the activities we found a bit odd/hard to do e.g the ring of invisibility, 8 different versions of the right thing to do. They really enjoyed the marble voting and I thought this was a great idea.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I'm not sure they changed hugely but my perceptions were maybe explored more as the students had lots of talk time. It was a great way to share lots of information that may not normally come up in the classroom.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit The teachers at our school who were working through this kit, decided to sit down together and go over some of the topics. We decided that some of the topic cards were more appropriate for Y8 and have them out at this point.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? This is a tricky one because lots of our children just love to share their own stories and/or speak about themselves. As above, it did give them a chance to speak about things that may not have naturally arisen in the classroom.

“This has been another brilliant kit with lots of different things that apply to our age group. We have intermediate aged students and they have enjoyed the different activities. We had to change out some of the cards as we believe they touched on subjects more suitable for Y8 and I currently only have Y7.”

“It most certainly opened my eyes to what I don't know and what the kids do know. I do worry about my own children and their future.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I was interested to see the large amount of inappropriate content the kids had seen through putting the wrong birthdate in. The fact that the students thought it was OK.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How easily they would make a decision without thinking fully. Also that they did know the correct response when we asked them to think carefully.

“Really enjoyed teaching this, found some of the cards a bit tricky with my Year 5's so didn't use them all. Loved the activities about decision making and had a very open and honest discussion around doing the right thing even though someone is watching - ring of Gyres lesson.”
