In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I already knew these were all issues that needed to be addressed which is why I insisted on starting CyberSafety when the children came back to school after alert level 3 lifted.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I don't believe holding back in these topics is safe. If we do and the subjects become 'taboo' to talk about then the children will not learn what is important but what 'shouldn't' be discussed. This will then result in children not disclosing inappropria

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The level of parental involvement in creating accounts for their children. Some parents were vigilant in having parental locks and sound supervision. A lot are very different. Opening up social media accounts for their children, ignoring age restrictions,

“This has been a large learning curve for my class of year 4-6 children. The year 5-6 children have had their Chromebooks for 1-2 years already so took part in the Kawa of Care (Manaiakalani) before I started teaching them. My year 4 children however had started it but then Covid19 and the lockdown made this come to an abrupt halt. I then saw the need for some significant work around Cyber Safety for my classroom. I was seeing and hearing about online bullying, students buying things online without permission, following accounts on social media that definitely are not for children and the list goes on. Using this kit I have been able to successfully influence my students understandings of online behaviour in positive ways. It is so incredibly hard to alter a child's thinking when the concept first has to be understood. Commenting on social media for the sake of commenting- why? What happens? What choice can/did you make that could be changed. These were very intense learning experiences that I do believe has made positive4 changes to my students online behaviours.”

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I didn’t like this kit. I appreciate all the effort made putting it together but I found it too hard and confusing and my students were the same. Would have preferred something a bit simpler

“This pack had a lot of stuff in it but for me was too complicated and confusing to teach. I was hoping for something a bit straight forward and easier to understand. Ended up not getting it all done and lots of questions”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I don't think my perceptions changed as I know my students quite well and found that a lot of stuff had already come out when we did the Sexuality Road Unit.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? It surprised me how how even though they knew some things were unsafe because they were under the age of a platform they were too scared to let their parents know.

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I was unaware of how many had already encountered issues online and this unit gave them the opportunity to share and come up with wise choices.

There is a vast difference in where certain boundaries are for different children, both online and offline. And while some students are very familiar with online content, others were completely unaware of what the other were even talking about.

“I appreciated that the kit could be tailored to meet the age, needs and interests of my students. It resulted in some interesting conversations and allowed discussion of very different viewpoints and experiences.”

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I was comfortable with it - I am happy teaching puberty and feel confident with that so I felt the same with these topics. However, there wasn't much of a need to go into some of these areas.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How honest and open they were. Also how respectful they were towards others and their situations.

“Clearly set out, gave learners the chance to talk and explore issues they hadn't considered. Actually couldn't have come at a better time - had an issue in our class that the learners knew wasn't right but were not sure how to deal with it. This kit gave us the opportunity for open discussions without judgement, thank you.”
