I think some students (Year 6) don't fully understand the power of the internet and the impact it can have, in terms of social media. It is concerning how many students have social media accounts, when they shouldn't. Teaching around what students post, l

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I believe that this kit would be awesome at the start of the year. It would work brilliantly with the online safety study that happens during term 1. I also think that this kits would work really effectively with the Keep Ourselves Safe programme.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The conversations around what students were posting and the range of social media accounts they have. Also, the amount of time students were sending online while at home.

“This would be a great kit to use at the start of the a teaching year. There is lots of good conversations that can happen with children keeping themselves safe online and offline. The start of the year is about building positive relationships with each other, rules and expectations and this kit would be great to support that teaching and learning.”

“Room 5 at Beaconsfield have loved the Safer Digital Behaviours Kit. We combined it with our Bully Free NZ week and there were lots of in depth conversations about behaving responsibly with digital devices and the role we can all play as up-standers rather than by-standers. In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I think I was pretty realistic around what goes on online. There were some interesting things shared with me in private conversations with a couple of children. Which is fantastic!

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The kids are so tech savvy- it is hard to keep up sometimes! We need to monitor constantly. Parents use the online world as a babysitting tool in some family homes. More parent education is definitely required.

“This unit was so timely- especially nearing the end of the year. The children engaged and were really reflective. I am going to go over this again in early 2021. As it will set the year off well too!”
