Diary of a Turtle helped my students better understand the impact plastic waste can have on marine life. Agree
We loved being able to help the sea creatures and turtles by keeping our school environment rubbish free. We are close to a river and we talked about the rubbish riding down the rivers and heading out to sea, so even though we couldn't make it to the sea for a clean up, we felt we were doing a good thing by cleaning up around our school. We also loved how looking after the land and oceans is in our school whakatauki, so this was a purposeful link to our learning too.

Kaaeaea enjoyed our inquiry topic this term-We explored the life cycle of a turtle, learnt about the different types of turtles and what impacts them in the ecosystem. The tamariki enjoyed receiving the little updates from the sea cleaners and I already have quite a handful who want to be marine biologists when they grow up!

We had already planned our Term, so we couldn't fully incorporate this program. The planning is thorough and easy to understand and adapt. We did a beach cleanup. The children loved that they are looking at real-life turtles.

We use the Diary of a Turtle. Keeping the sea rubbish free with Sea Cleaners. We focused on the Teaching Guide. We watched our mission explanation and loved the title of Rubbish Rangers. We focused on a are to monitor and regularly keep rubbish free. We combined with Whaea Max and her class to make a greater impact on our local school environment the bottom field of our school. We are two classes Year 1 and Year 2. The children ended up taking the spare bags home with their gloves to clean up around their environment.

This fit so well with our Term 4 inquiry - "How Can I Be a Kaitiaki of My World?" Our class loved tracking a turtle and the text messages. The interactive nature of this turtle tracking was fantastic. We were able to complete a school clean up and the public park next to us. While we are not next to the beach, there is a creek that runs along side the back of the school field that eventually leads to the Tamaki Estuary. Chidlren can now clearly articulate what happens if they are not careful with rubbish and in particular food packets and where it will go. Our action of the environment clean up was shared via our school facebook page and some of our Year 2 students were interviewed by our principal for her Monday morning message to discuss the rubbish they found, what the impact was on the environment and gave a message to the whole school about being careful with foor wrapers (the main type of rubbish we found). Great impact from little people!

Our class of year 0-4 have had an amazing adventure following our turtle Riptide. We have followed her journey the whole term and have loved seeing the places she has travelled. We learnt a little about her through a story (that Chat GPT help create using the information off the tracking site) We met Captain Hayden and his crew through videos and the text messages he sent were fabulous! We created art pieces, completed reading and comprehension tasks, did some of our own inquiry into turtles and shared our learning with our family at home. But most importantly we have learned to put our rubbish in the bin to show kaitiakitanga of our environment and all of the creatures that live within it. We have had students running up to us with rubbish in hand at out of school events saying 'this could kill riptide and other sea creatures!' We have loved seeing our students engagement in this topic, their love of Riptide and their dedication to keep our oceans clean. Thanks school kit for providing a really cool resource that we could take our own spin on and make it our own suitable for our own kids.
