Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves as they were popular with the 5 year olds and helped to consolidate our helping hands programme .

“This was a great kit and we used it along side sustainability and recycling. The children always do a school tidy up called helping hands, so using the gloves was popular and a highlight for the children. We talked about how rubbish can get out to the oceans and affect the turtles. The new entrants were very passionate about this topic.”

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves were great and made it special and meaningful for the kids to feel like that they were fully involved and had something to show for it.

“Our tamariki loved looking at our chosen turtle. However to begin with the links were broken so it did take us a little bit to get it working. We utilised this resource most during Conservation Week which our kids loved and used the gloves to pick up rubbish from around the school.”

“Our class did not use the turtle tracking part of the kit, but used the gloves and rubbish bags to clean up our school environment. Students also used the gloves to go digging for worms are part of a worm study. Each student was able to take home thier own set of gloves at the end of this project.”

“Our Year 3 class really enjoyed reading Diary of a Turtle 25! It helped us understand how rubbish affects the environment, especially our oceans and lakes. We took action by picking up rubbish around our school to protect the lake nearby. The diary made the students think about how animals are impacted when their homes are full of plastic and rubbish. It made students realise that we can make a difference. This project showed us that even small actions—like picking up one piece of rubbish—can help save a turtle’s life. Students also loved following the turtle’s journey and all updates included in the kit.”

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Collecting rubbish and making students more aware of the impact rubbish has on the enviorment, the sea turtle mirgration was really great and students were really engaged with this activitu- every morning when they arrived at school they would check on their sea turtle.

How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We had to adapt this part to our school groups and reserve opposite as our school wasnt close enough to a beach

How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Huge impact, students were really engaged and recognised the impacts on the enviroment - we also held a plastic free lunch box week which they loved and involved whanau awareness too

“One of my co-teachers taught this kit with a third of my class (she’s the enviro lead at our school). It provided awesome hands on learning experiences for our students and had our children buzzing for weeks. Those students taught the rest of the class what they had been learning in the unit in sharing week last term. Thank you for the amazing resource”
