Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The gloves and the rubbish bags because this helped to motivate the children to clean up our environment. We also used these both at a school assembly and sung a song about caring for our oceans. Everyone wanted gloves like ours. Also the giant turtle which we covered in rubbish.

This was the BEST kit I have ever used - thank you! The children and teachers all LOVED it and have made some real authetic changes to their thoughts and actions as a result of their new learning. The children loved starting their day by finding out where 'our turtle' "Lil Mango" had swum while we were sleeping overnight.

The content was engaging and helped students understand the impact humans have on marine life. I adapted the resource to align with our concept-based Inquiry, which meant I didn’t use all of the provided planning. However, the visuals, real-life examples, and focus on environmental responsibility supported rich discussions and hands-on learning. It was a valuable base for exploring sustainability and kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment) with our tamariki.

The Diary of a Turtle School Kit was highly engaging for our learners. There was a lot of detail in the resources provided/online, and the content was pitched at a level for learners to succeed. It was great for learners to have more of an idea of the impact of rubbish of the environment, they found this very engaging and motivating.

Kids loved the message from the Sea Cleaner Captain at the beginning - this really helped to hook them in and gave them lots of motivation to join the team. The gloves and bags were awesome! The turtle tracking was really great too - the kids loved our weekly check-ins and many of them got their parents to scan the QR code so they could do it at home.

My class of year 2 and 3 students loved connecting the online tracking of a turtle with the messages from sea cleaners, and writing a diary from the perspective of the turtle. We did our clean up at a local domain, which the kids use often. This was a great motivation!

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The shared reading texts and the turtle tracking. The shared reading texts were at the right level for my class and prompted them to think more deeply about what is happening in our oceans. The follow on activities were cute and easy for the kids to relate too. Being able to track a turtle and mark this daily was a great way to introduce our new Numicon equipment to the class and learn about place value.

Diary of a turtle was more than a beach clean up/Sea Cleaners - my class became Sea Rangers and scientists tracking a sea turtle, thinking about the environmental impact we have on turtles and taking action. The links to reading, writing and maths were so engaging and it was so wonderful to see my most disengaged students tell to any adult who would listen turtle facts.
